It really irks me to hear so many people unable to pronounce his name, especially on Hibs TV...

Im 99.9% certain its pronounced:-

Mat-Choo-Le-Vis-ious

not

Matul-vichoos

Like the commentator on Hibs TV insists on calling him.

Any thoughts?

I think you'll find that the commentator is pronouncing his name correctly. It is indeed 'choos' at the end of his name.

How does he look. Was it him that Lennon alluded to being behind the rest of the squad in fitness

Looks mobile for a big lad. Yes Lennon said he's a bit behind as has had a bit of an injury so is still intergrating into the team. He was delighted with his goal and certainly got plenty power behind it.

Took his goal well, never got a lot of time to do much else of note although looked comfortable on the ball.

That is spot on. The 'le' is elongated so it is more like 'lay'.

Is that possibly because it's a different language entirely?

You'd be as well asking an Englishman how to pronounce a Gaelic or Welsh name correctly.

for our Scottish tongues, it's something like Matay-lavvy-choos

I mind Hearts used to have a Lithuanian called Ksanavicius. I presumed the correct pronounciation was "san-ah-vee-chus" and the Sportsound team were just being lazy/stupid when they said "kees-ah-neh-vee-chus". After listening to that link above, it turns out they were right and I was wrong. Mah-tuh-leh-vi-chus it is then.

Pedant alert...but you are right. They are entirely different language groups. Lithuanian is Baltic (as is Latvian, but not Estonian which is Finno-Ugric). Polish and Croatian are Slavic.

My lithuanian colleague has confirmed it is pronounced

"Matu - la - vi - chus"

He also claimed that Slivka is the Lithuanian Modric but I think he is having my leg over on that one :greengrin

And another (not so) interesting factoid.

The nearest language group to Baltic is the ancent language of Sanskrit. In fact, they share some of the same words.
