I've used it for the last 2 years - there is no catch. I believe the other companies are implementing it now too as part of some EU law change. Probably something we will lose after Brexit ☹️

Saved thousands over the last few years. Great feeling when you get back to the UK and you get a text saying you have spent £116 when you were in Spain but it costs you nothing. Excellent service.

Yeah I've used it in Spain. Feel At Home I think it's called, you can use your contract just as you would here.

I didn't get a text saying I would have spent £X amount though.

It is, I'm using it the now. It changed last month. Hopefully brexit won't change it back.

It's only free because of EU legislation.

Brexit will almost certainly mean we'll get charged for calls and roaming in Europe.

All providers in Europe offer roaming in most other European countries at no additional cost.

I'm just back from Portugal and used it every day and it cost me nothing. Although I'm with O2 and they don't offer 4G abroad so it was a bit slower than I was used to.

It was the European Union that forced phone companies to drop charges, the fact that they have also dropped charges for a few other countries doesn't mean that they will continue the free roaming when they arent legally required to do so. With a bit of luck the British government will force them to continue with what we have now.

I'm with EE and like all the others now do free roaming in Europe, some do selected other countries too.

For my trip earlier this year I bought a 3 wireless Wi-Fi thingy on pay as you go and was able to use 'UK' data in the USA, New Zealand and Australia. I also used it pre deregulation in Spain. I think the full list is 40 or 60 countries.

For those unable to get UK data outside the EU check and see if 3 do. The dongle thingy was about £40 with 3 or 4 GB of data included. It was way cheaper and more convenient than EE just on my phone (I could use it on my phone and tablet and so could my wife) and easily topped up.

Norway, Liechtenstein, Iceland are all in the EEA (full single market members) so are covered by the new rules. Switzerland isn't, so how it's treated is up to the provider, some are still charging, some aren't.

None of the UK providers charge anything extra for using your phone in Switzerland though, which was my point.

With vodaphone you can call numbers in the country you're in.

Don't turn your vodafone handset on in US, they automatically charge you a fiver per day.

Thanks LB. I've got Vodafone and pay 4 Euros extra that allows me to call any EU country and the US from any EU country or the US on a flat rate with data included. I guess what I'm asking is can I now save the 4 Euros by cancelling the extra add-on?

The new ruling only covers the EU so I don't know about calling the US. When I was getting ready to come over to Spain the recorded message definitely said something about an extra charge for using your phone outwith th EU, but I couldn't tell you if that meant calling out from within the EU

It means that using the phone in any EU country (actually any EEA country) should incur the same cost as using the phone in your home country, there should be no extra charge associated with relocating the device.

So, if it costs me 10p/min to call another UK number but 50p/min to call Germany from the UK. If I go to Germany it will still cost me 10p/min to call the UK and 50p/min to call Germany.

Edit: that's just what the new rules say must happen. Obviously your provider can give you a better deal than that if they want to.
