That's a bit of a leap from having agreed a fee no?
Why else would Cambridge allow their player to go and visit another club while under contract with them?

I said absolutely nothing about Rod Petrie. Weird turn to take it. I've also never once mentioned us scrimping on the deal or not offering enough cash to the player. Calm down.

How is it tragic? Paper/media outlet links us with a player, topic opens, negotiations drag on, fans discuss recent developments. The recent trend for folk on here requesting threads to be closed is utterly ridiculous. Should we just close every subject that doesn't contain what you want to hear?
If the deal doesn't go through this topic will drop off the first page like every other non relevant thread. Until then let's just leave it open for debate.

Still sounds like an ambitious move by Hibs to try and sign a well regarded player by getting in first ahead of other interested clubs. If it does or doesn't come off its good to see the club showing intent in the transfer market.

Not slating Young Murray, think he's got a bright future but hardly the alternative to a £250k signing with a history of banging them in from Midfield.

Disappointing, and a little embarrassing. Quite rare for clubs to agree a fee etc and for the club/player to fail to agree personal terms. These things should have been assessed or sounded out with the players' agent early on.

These things happen though. Selling club accept the transfer fee but player may not want to join despite his club accepting the transfer offer.

What are you basing that on? I don't believe it's that rare at all
There are also several potential reasons why he may not have signed, it's not necessarily the fault of the club

Correct, who had heard of Berry previously he plays in the 4th, yes 4th tier of English football. His agent's played a blinder, everyone knows he is available for transfer & at what price also you can bet they will have worked out what his basic wage demands will be following his ER visit. If he goes it will still be at the lower levels of the English game, which I agree may well pay him more.

Could another option be that whilst he liked what he saw at Hibs, when he factored in moving north and the potential upheaval then coupled it with the utterly dire Scottish performances during the week wondered what level of football he was letting himself in for so opted to price himself out of the move(if wages appeared to be the stumbling block) just a thought

He was "banging" them in whilst playing in the English 4th tier, there was absolutely no chance that he would score that many in the top tier in Scotland, if he was that good he would have been snapped up by another team already.
I am certain we will sign somebody better than Luke Berry.

He was snapped up by a team in a higher league and failed miserably so was punted back to Cambridge asap. Berry looked good and I was excited by his potential signing based on the video clips and his goal record last season but he still would've been a bit of a risk. I'm excited to see who Lennon targets next.

Exactly. James Collins scored 1 in 3 a league above Berry before joining Hibs for 200k. He then went back and did the same in League 2 and has improved since then.

Why would Cambridge accept an offer and then pull the plug? Something must've happened for that to be the case. They can't have gone from being fully accepting of the player leaving to come to us and then randomly just not. Something must've happened. Maybe they wanted the fee kept quiet? Much like us with JC. Keeping the fee quiet is virtually impossible these days. News outlets will report on the fee/possible fee in almost every deal that goes on. SSN broke the story and mentioned the 250k. I'd be astonished if Cambridge wanted to pull the deal because of that. Even if that was the case, if the player wanted to move to us that badly he could have forced their hand to make it happen.

According to the Cambridge Utd Chairman they did not agree a fee for Luke Berry with any club.
He states there were 4 bids made for the player, all of which they rejected.
What it doesn't state is who made the offers. So Hibs may have made all 4 offers or none at all.
Sheds a bit more light on the issue and shows us fans that the player didn't turn us down. He is an under contract player and his team decided to keep hold of him.

If hibs never told the media a fee was agreed and it came from a rumour page then why not just tell ssn this is fake and negotiations are still ongoing?
I truly don't know if it's common for a player to be shown around, but if negotiations were still ongoing I don't see why hibs couldn't request the chance to speak to him and maybe meet the squad etc to see if he would fit the plan.
If the goalposts were moved what's would hibs not just be blunt and say a fee was agreed and they moved it (if true) or say a fee couldn't be reached.

As we are all aware, Hibs rarely comment regarding transfers until they are complete and even when they do they don't get into the real details in public.

As in the proper way to do business. And if it is genuinely a personal thing with player and/or wages I agree we wouldn't announce it. But the fact the chairman said a fee wasn't agreed and if it's putting hibs or fans connected to hibs in a bad light I'd expect us to say something, don't you think?
Edit. I realise my first bit might be misread. I meant why didn't Cambridge say to ssn negotiones are still ongoing if he cares enough about to gossip to make that statement.

Just another chapter in the crazy world of the transfer window. A fee must have been broadly agreed for him to fly out to Edinburgh and go to HTC. Sounds like the players fancied it but their club got greedy when presumably other clubs became interested. I would of thought adding in say a sell on clause would maybe have been a solution but it probably didn't get to that.
