View Full Version : Other clubs that are referred to by their nickname more often then their real name

Always found it interesting that people rarely use the full names for Hibs and hearts

What other clubs does this apply to?

(Also examples like referring to Newcastle United as Newcastle don't count )

EDIT: Should have been more specific in my Newcastle example.

If the word appears in the full name of the club then it doesn't count

Therefore Hibs and Spurs are fine, but things like Villa, Rangers, Rovers etc don't count

It was my understanding that the name referred to the club as Dundee United used to frequently put sand on their pitch.

It still only refers to the fans, though, according to an Arab colleague. He says the club are the Terrors.

Upton Park is the area not the football ground. You could watch West Ham play at Upton Park the same as you could watch the hertz play at Gorgie.

I used to love winding up a Celtic fan I worked with for years by asking her if she was at Parkhead at the weekend. The more she insisted on calling it Celtic Park the more I'd call it Parkhead until she would storm off in a huff.

On Dundee Utds nickname
Its both the Terrors or The Tangerines
Although i dont recall any Utd fan calling them that at games
Arabs is a name for their fans
On the Arab origin.
It may likely be connected to the "sanding" of the pitch
Tannadice back in the day had a horrendous playing surface, season after season
Made the old Boghead look like a bowling green

Another take was when George Galloway was leader of Dundee Council, the Labour administration flew the Palestinian flag above the City Chambers in solidarity with the plight of Palestinians(Arabs) in the occupied territories.

Galloway (although he know claims to be a Celt) was then, allegedly, a DU fan.
Maybe that is a loose connection
However,it was around that time some DU fans wore Arab headdresses to games.

The sanding of the pitch is more likely the case though.

Peterborough are "Posh" to anyone in and around the local area, though not so much nationally. Posh is a pretty unusual nickname so will more often than not be used within news articles or match reports after an initial mention, but it rarely replaces Peterborough entirely.

If Man Yoo is allowed I'd say that and Spurs are the only ones used as often as Hibs and Hearts. Lots of folks down south often ask me about "the Hi-bees" too which I find pretty cool.

Notts Forest.

Wrong!

It's Nottm. Forest not to be confused with Notts. County.

West Brom are usually referred to as 'Yow Baggies'.

Shrewsbury Town are 'Salop'.

Sheffield Wednesday are the 'Owls'.

Sheffield United are the 'Blades'.

MK Dons are 'Franchise FC'.

Hull City are NOT known as the 'Tigers'.

Newcastle United are the 'Toon' or the 'Barcodes'.

Sunderland are the 'Makems'.

West Ham United are the 'Hammers'. Nothing to do with West Ham as they had that name before they moved to Upton Park. They used to be an ironworks team.

Walsall are the 'Saddlers'.

Oldham Athleic are the 'Latics'.

Norwich City are the 'Canaries'

Charlton Athletic are the 'Robins'. The used to play "When the Red Red Robin Comes Bob Bob Bobbin' Along" as they came out onto the pitch bouncing in time with the music!!

Brighton are/were the 'Seagulls'.

Plymouth Argyll are/were the 'Pilgrims' or the 'Green Slime' if you support Exeter City.

Briston Rovers are the 'Gas' as their former stadium was next to a gasworks.

Chesterfield are the 'Spireites'.

Everton are the 'Toffees' after Everton Mints that used to be thrown to the crowd by the Toffee Lady before all matches.
