With the season being at an end and some shocking transfer rumours, I was just wondering who you guys think where the best player to ever play and not get a cap for Scotland. And also the worst player to get a cap?

Best: Alex Edwards by a country mile.
Worst: Garry Kenneth by a country mile.

John McGovern won two European Cups for Nottingham Forest and never played for Scotland. Imagine that now?!!

As for worst there's too many to mention. Barry Bannen must be one.

It's annoying that he was great for his club as otherwise there would be no defence at all for the continuous capping of the international über huddy that wis Brian McClair :grr::grr::grr:

John Collins when he was at Hibs. As soon as he was at Celtic he was in though.

Stevie Crawford got 25 caps for Scotland!

Crawford was a decent player , definitely not the worst.

Lee Wilkie played 11 times for Scotland.

This needs to be made into a best or worst 11.

I'm struggling with the best version, but there's (sadly) a fair few shockers who were either capped or given a stupid number of appearances. Lee Wilkie with 11 caps? I can't imagine the self esteem hit that would've caused to any other uncapped Scottish defender.

I know I just don't think he was good enough to warrant 25 caps.

Yeah your right. A meaningless friendly after there was much clamour to give him a cap. As soon as he went to Celtic he was straight in the squad.

Alex Edwards would win 100 caps today.
Also Alan Gordon was chosen for a rest of the world team in a testimonial but not Scotland????
Eric Stevenson also worth a mention.

A quick google search gives out some interesting names and a few Hibby's mentioned.

Quite incredible that Harry Hood never got a cap in that era, shows how blessed we were back then.

Nice article. The Tommy Adams section could do with an update though re East Fife being the only club to win the Scottish Cup from outside the top league

Kirk Broadfoot, sake man.

Also Kevin Kyle, didn't Vogts give him his first cap before he even made a senior appearance for Sunderland?

Notable mentions to Maurice Ross, Paul Ritchie, Matt Elliot, Gareth Williams, Steven Pearson.

What about Steve Saunders. Capped in 2010 against the faroes, when he was only about 20 year old.

I don't even remember him! Just saw his name on Wikipedia as someone with one cap.

We (Scotland) could do with Gordon Hunter these days. Miles better than any current Scottish centre half but unfortunately there was some pretty serious competition back in his day. He would tangle with, and get the better of McCoist and Hateley at a weekend before that pair would get the better of the English Champions (and teams of that quality) in Europe through the week.

Ian Black in a Scotland shirt at Easter Road was about as clever a move from Levein as 4-6-0 was.

I’m really not sure about players who were capped that shouldn’t have been, there have been a small legion of them. Two great players who never received the accolade though:

John McGovern

A player who won a host of silverware including two European Cups and Championship trophies with two smaller, unfashionable clubs in Nottingham Forest and Derby County. McGovern often had fierce competition for a Scotland midfield berth in the likes of Souness, Hartford, Archie Gemmill, John Wark and so on. Souness said that the Montrose man was the most difficult midfield opponent he had faced. Never a flashy player he did the simple things right and was the consummate team man, always supporting his teammates, always available for the ball. He was the glue in the great Forest side among more naturally talented performers.

He once claimed that Ally MacLeod wasn’t even aware he was Scottish!

Alan Gordon

Another is our own classic centre forward, of Turnbull's Tornadoes fame. Tall, elegant and a great header of the ball. Utterly underrated by the Scotland selectors

He gets my vote. Currently playing for TNS in Wales and couldn't get a game for Dumbarton before that. Utterly scandalous.

I went to that match as I was living in HK at the time. Don't remember much about it apart from loads of guys in kilts, Scotland tops and Timberlands.
