With the signing of Ambrose (not sure if been confirmed) and Murray, and rumours of possibly whittaker, serecombe and Stokes etc. What would be your best possible starting XI for next season for us? Mines would be 3-5-2.

Marciano

Ambrose
Mcgregor
Hanlon

Gray
Mcgeouch
McGinn
Bartley
Whittaker

Stokes
Cummings

Think that team would certainly challenge top four and possibly even higher.

Why are people always so quick to drop Stevenson? He was one of our best players last season, very consistent, Gray on the other had was shocking for 2 or 3 months.

I wouldn't want to play Bartley along with a back 3 for most teams in the league. Celtic, Aberdeen etc yes but too defensive for the likes of Partick, Hamilton and Killie imo. Unless we wanted to play more attacking players as the wingbacks that is.......

This, based on last season Stevenson gets in ahead of Gray.

Gray is the captain so that alone would see him ahead of Stevenson

Tosh, best XI first then captain from those. McGregor a more than capable stand in should Gray not start.

Not necessarily, Stevenson is a better full back than Gray. But neither are that great as wing backs

That woud some team and bench.

If we intend on playing 3 at the back we will need two new starting wingbacks IMO, and I can't see that happening. Could be more likely that we stick with a back 4 and the manager has to make some tough selection choices.

Whatever the case, it's an excellent problem to have. Ambrose will be the only CB in the squad who hasn't had to deal with multiple long(ish) term injury problems in his career, so having high quality cover is necessary.

The tread is "best possible starting XI", not most likely.

How likely is it that we'll sign Whittaker really.

I know there was talk at the start of May but I've heard nothing since then

Load of rubbish. you play your best possible 11. Totti/Rooney have been club captains this past season and barely played.

Kenny Millar said in The Sun today that we are still interested.

Agreed, the captaincy is more ceremonial than anything else and we should expect there to be several players who will step up and lead when necessary

Cheers just saw that.

Says Hearts are also interested which is slightly worrying because he'd be a massive improvement on what they've got now and he was also raised a jambo IIRC

So I say for those reasons alone we go all out to sign him :greengrin

Gray WAS the captain. But you certainly don't get picked due to being captain.

I think the point being made is that it's highly unlikely we'll be spending what would probably be a big wage in signing Whittaker with the intention of playing him out of position.

I understand he can play left back - and probably to a better standard than Paul Hanlon who can play left back - and cover is great but the guy is a right back. If we are signing him then it's almost certainly to play right midfield.

I find it a little bit mental that people think we're signing Whittaker to replace Lewis Stevenson.
