Nothing to do with Eurovision! UEFA are doing a trial on the order of kicks in penalty shoot outs. So instead of alternative kicks it's team a, team b, team b, team a, etc. At the moment team going first wins 60% of shootouts. Load of nonsense in my opinion what's everyone's thoughts?

Why not chuck it into a random order generator, aaabaabbbb would be quite an interesting shoot out

Simultaneous kicks at each end. That would be entertaining.

That's because team B doesn't normally have Conrad Logan in goal for them.

Can't see the ABBA thing being adopted. The 60/40% success ratio will be down to the fact that more penalties are scored than not, therefore more often than not team B are under pressure to score just to stay level. Presumably EUFA are trying to get it to a 50/50 ratio so they'd be better moving the penalty spot further away to a distance where 50% of penalties are scored. Maybe for shootouts the kick could be taken from the line for the edge of the box and it could be taken from anywhere along the line to make it more interesting.

Think it is a good change, shooting first is definitely an advantage.

So the standard five kicks would be

A BB AA BB AA B

And if everyone scored it would be

1-0 1-2 3-2 3-4 5-4 5-5

Very interesting changes of momentum there, so I'd be in favour of giving this a try.

I heard about this a wee while ago on the news, I think it's a good idea.

It's basically how tennis sorts out who serves in a tiebreak to ensure that no-one's disadvantaged. Credit where it's due, I think this is worth pursuing.

It's actually a sensible suggestion.

However, extra time is more in need of fixing IMO.

How about a moving penalty spot to spice it up a little?

The penalty shootout is awful because it's all about the player who misses.
The 'penalties' should be from the 18 yard line. The onus would then be on scoring a good goal rather than, let's face it, shooting fish in a bucket.

What about shots from the half-way line?

Some ridiculous suggestions. A solution that is both exciting for the fans and maintains the players dignity is staring us in the face.

The solution is called dizzy penalties taken against keepers dressed as mascots.

If it seems to be such an advantage to go 1st, rather than a coin toss to determine who goes 1st, maybe some sort of incentive to encourage attacking play during the 90 mins or extra time e.g. Team that had the most corners during the game

Player has a choice of 3 balls to kick, one is a real ball, one filled with wet sand and one with a grenade in it. What entertainment that would be :greengrin

But then what if it is 5-5? Sudden death with A B; B A; A B; B A etc etc? In tennis you need to win by 2 points.

Penalties is a pretty poor way of deciding big games in the first place, but if this makes it fairer then I think its worth a shout.

Yes, we beat Aberdeen at that so should be in the cup final (the match scoreline should be incidental).

Don't think there's anything wrong with the current format. Would be interested to see the stats on how many teams that go first win the shootout.

As someone else mentioned, the ET is in need of sorting. Golden goal most sensible IMO and an absolute rammy when the goal is scored always makes it more exciting.

60% according to the article.

I'd stick with your running order and sudden death, although there is a case for starting sudden death with B A rather than A B.

Given that it's been ABABAB for so long, I think it's only fair we have a period of time to even things up a bit. So I think we should have a 20 year period of BABABA before thinking of changing it to a tennis tie break type scenario. Those poor team B's deserve a break!

Be as well just going straight to the Compliance Officer, as when you lose you can always get the result overturned, no matter how clear-cut the decision was??????
