View Full Version : Win on Saturday and we're champions, irrespective of the falkirk score.

I'm seriously starting to wonder how many people have actually looked at the league table recently. I've read a lot of comments on here saying they are 'praying that Falkirk drop points' as they don't want it 'going down to the wire' and a 'distraction that could be disastrous.

If we win on Saturday AND Falkirk even manage 3 points also, there will be 3 league games left with 9 points up for grabs......however, WE HAVE A +10 (PLUS TEN!!) goal advantage over them. Therefore to somehow not become champions we would need to lose the last 3 games heavily - 3-0, 3-0, 4-0, or 5-0, 3-0, 2-0 etc etc, and Falkirk MIRROR these exact same results in reverse.

Don't be silly in thinking that could even remotely happen. So again, Falkirk can do what the want on Saturday. A Hibs win and we are Champions.

End Of.

I agree we will be champions but your arithmetic is flawed I think. In your scenario, if Falkirk had victories that mirrored our defeats then they would have superior GD by the penultimate game:

3 games left, Hibs nine points clear with a GD lead of 10. As you've described above Hibs lose 0-3 and they win 3-0.

The GD gap becomes 4 in our favour. If the result is repeated in the next game then they have a GD lead of 2 but are still three points behind. Meaning we need only to avoid defeat on the last day and they would have to win.

Can't see that happening.

If nothing else, when has an Edinburgh team played the last fixture merely needing to avoid defeat to win a title. I can't recall anything like that!

Pretty sure that hasn't happened since 1965, though I'd be prepared to change my mind if anyone could provide photographic evidence of a more recent event.

Not to piss on your parade but if we lose 2-0, 1-0 and 2-0, Falkirk would only need to win by the same.
In your scenario, the GD overturned would be 20

Ok, excuse my arithmetic, not sure why I quite put it that way. However the general consensus of the point of my thread stands. Win on Saturday and Falkirk can do what they like because it simply won't happen for them with only 9 to play for and too big a goal difference to overturn in 3 games. Not to mention the fact that we don't lose. We may be draw specialists yes, but lose 3 in a row? Simply not gonna happen. Even if by a miracle it does, we wouldn't be hammered enough and Falkirk win 3 emphatically enough for them to overturn it.

I just hope folk celebrate come full time on Saturday after we win and embrace us as Champions regardless of what's happened at Falkirk.

No one is champions until it's impossible for someone to catch them.

We are NOT champions on Saturday if we win, unless Falkirk don't. Doesn't matter how many goals in front we are, it's not over until it's over.

Don't mean to be a beacon of pessimism but I'll wait until it's officially done. It's not beyond any team to lose 3 games by even just 1 goal, leaving Falkirk 7 goals to make up on us - not impossible.
Falkirk also play Dunfermline, QoTS, then Dumbarton - the only 3 teams with nothing to play for (Dumbarton might at the end).

I still fancy us to win and them to draw on Saturday and make that all irrelevant though.

I see your point, however I want a Hibs win and Falkirk draw/loss on Saturday then all other scenarios are completely irrelevant. Too many "possibilities" to think about, so let's just put it to bed on Saturday then concentrate on the semi.

It is highly unlikely that if we win on Saturday that we won't win the league. BUT... we win 1 nil they win 2 nil goal difference is down to 9. We lose the 3 remaining games 1 nil it's down to 6. They win their 3 games 2 nil they go up and we are in the play offs.

I don't see them winning 4 games and getting + 8 goals in the process but to assume the goal difference means we only need 3 points is a bit optimistic.

As long as we better Falkirk's result on saturday we're champs. If we both win it's not over on goal difference.
Personally, I'll wait till it's officially won before celebrating. Admire California Hibs' optimism but having watched Hibs for a very long time, I'll applaud the boys at the end of the game as always then wait till it's a done deal.

Your arithmetic is wrong I'm afraid. If we lose 2-0, 2-0 and 1-0 our goal difference is +21. If Falkirk win their last three by 2 goals their difference is +22. They win the league. It becomes 'easier' for Falkirk if they win by more goals than Hibs do tomorrow. However, even then its is as you say a highly remote possibility.

Its a bit like when Hertz lost the league in '86. Too much chat about it being impossible. A 2-0 defeat for hertz and a 2-0 win for celtic would have been enough.

Dundee United play Ayr away on Alba 5.15 kick off, so we might have to wait until later tomorrow evening to be crowned champions.

Your basic sums are wrong, if we lose all the games 2-0 and they win 2-0, then that is a 12 goal turnaround. Saying that, unlikely I'd agree, but hearts were thinking that in 85. :greengrin

a +10 GD is easy overcome in 3 games (seeing as we need to lose all our games at they need to win all there)

Thats minimum 6 goal swing (1-0 loss against 1-0 win)

Throw in a couple of 2-0 wins or loses and its easy to overcome

Cant see us losing 3 on the trot tho
