I doubt this will come into play soon enough for my next trip so I expect the usual reaming.

Comes in on June 15th IIRC, some companies have already done it and others due to introduce it before the deadline.

Unfortunately the UK might only get 2 years max out of it due to brexit.

Maybe, although once implemented the mobile companies would then have to decide to reinstate roaming charges after brexit, and it would just take one to break ranks for no roaming charges to continue. If they all reinstated charges at the same time they could then eave themselves open to accusations and sanctions for price-fixing.

The reason roaming charges were originally in place was due to the costs of network interconnects and info transfer, as those costs became negligible the EU pushed for an end to the extra costs to End Users hence the current position, remembering also that taxation was simply based on "home location" of the service provider.
Post Brexit the taxation element is going to be up in the air, its difficult to imagine that there would be no taxation implications that could then have a knock on effect on end user costs.

Vat on services is based on where the supply takes place. Thats what happens at the moment. For UK customers, the service takes place in the UK, notwithstanding that the user might be elsewhere.
I'm not sure that, post Brexit, the VAT situation will.be any different to what it is just now.

That's a better way to put it :agree:
Post Brexit will that still be the case though, at the very least they'd have to at least agree to keep it the same? I just can't see this one area being totally ignored.
Maybe I should add (I was trying. Keep things simple) there's also an interconnect cost that the providers will be taxed on

UK VAT laws are set by UK Government, so I don't see that there would be a change.
On the interconnect charges, again if the service is supplied in the UK...eg from the UK to a foreign company, it's liable to UK VAT. And vice versa.
That all.said, VAT is the most complicated of all our taxes....and overseas trade particularly difficult. So I agree that there may be some changes ahead. However, IMO those will be under the control of the UK Government .

interesting times then! .... I wonder what other areas wont be significantly impacted with the change in trading relationships that Brexit brings, maybe those that claim there's only an upside may be closer to the truth after all! (fingers crossed)

The new regulations are EU regulations. Once we're out there's nothing to stop EU providers bumping up the charges for UK users when abroad.

Or you are hoping that they will bump up their charges for UK Customers :)
I'm not sure how this fits in to countries legislation but the no roaming charges extend to more than the EU countries and it depends on who you're with as to how many and which countries are included.
Three, 3, I think were the first to introduce this and it covers 42 countries

I suppose a lot will depend on the company you're with. If they have partnerships with network providers abroad then they will probably have agreements in place that allow each others customers to use their networks free of charge. If your provider has to pay a foreign provider to let you use that network, then chances are you will be billed for it.

That nips ma heid when I'm abroad. Vodafone, as an example, trade in most countries but users are/were still charged as though they were completely independent of each other.

I don't know about other companies but Vodafone do seem to act like independent companies in each country.
I had a phone contect with them for 3 years whilst living in Oz, come back to the Uk and wanted to get a Uk contract, I was declined by Vodafone because I had been out of the country for 3 years. When I explained that i'd been with them for 8 years in total they weren't bothered, they had no way to trace my account etc etc
Wouldn't use them again, utterly bizarre

I'm actually a German Vodafone customer. I pay €3 extra a month to extend my flatrate contract to all EU countries and a few others including the USA and Australia. I'm sure it probably doesn't cost them a penny but it's a service I make good use of.

I have iPhone with Verizon and Samsung Galaxy with ATT and both companies have been doing a tag team on me when traveling.

If anyone is thinking about switching to 3 for the feel at home feature, you should know that you don't get free LTE roaming. In most places you get data at 3G speeds, which is fine. But there are some places, like when connected to 3 Macau's network, where you only get super slow 2G data which is barely usable.

I had 4G when using it in NYC.
