View Full Version : Best hibs game you've been to (outside of Cup final)

Was having a discussion with a pal the other night about best Hibs game I have ever been to before Scottish cup final, been to some very dull and forgettable games but also some very good ones. 6-2 vs them comes to mind even the 2-2 at Tynecastle was great. I'm too young to have been at 7-0 however.

What is everyone's favourite hibs game before Scottish cup final? What are your earliest memories of Easter Road?

2007 League Cup Final - it was the first time I had ever witnessed a Hibs team winning a major trophy and it was a very special occasion for me for that reason.

The 4-3 semi v Falkirk is also up there, an absolutely mental game from start to finish and never before have I been to a game that has been so literally "a game of two halves". In fact that phrase was coined especially for that match!

European match. The 5-0 demolition of Napoli at Easter Road in 1968. 4-1 down from the first leg in Italy and with the legendary Dino Zoff in goals for the Italians we weren't expected to get through to the next round but we did.

A great night under the floodlights at Easter Road. That goal from Bobby Duncan too. Rumours are that the following year Neil Armstrong found the ball on the moon. Even did a few keepie uppies with it. :agree:

Also the two League Cup Finals of 1972 and 2007 at Hampden.

Rangers at ER circa 96. They had a ridiculously strong team. We won 2-1 despite them getting a penalty in the last couple of minutes. Laudrup missed it so the referee allowed him a retake which Leighton saved. Even then they nearly scored because Millen was all over Leighton congratulating him and getting in the way. From the penalty first being awarded to us finally clearing the ball it was a complete rollercoaster.

As a 14 year old with my grandfather at Hibs v Juventus UEFA Cup 1st leg October 1974.
Hibs went 2-1 up with goals either side of the hour mark from Cropley and Stanton.
Juventus eventually won 2-4 with a couple of goals from the great Altafine.
Under the floodlights with a great atmosphere against a great team containing players I had only seen on TV. A wonderful memory.

Sporting Lisbon 6-1. I think this was the game that coined the phrase. If we didn't know how good the Tornadoes were this was the proof.

2-1 down from the first leg against a very good side this was seen as a very good scoreline.

1-1 at half time at Easter Road (2-3 on agg) scoring two goals in the second half without reply to qualify was a tough ask.............we scored five and it could have been 10 we were that good. Over 22,000 there and great atmosphere. I was 14 and in awe.

Lots of worthy candidates and I wouldn't disagree with any of them

I loved the 2-0 game when we beat their "unbeatables" and a 2-2 game away at Kilmarnock one New Year when the Hibs Support drowned out their half time presentation to I think Dylan Kerr after he said something along the lines of "I don't know who that lot are"

I particularly don't like Falkirk either and really enjoyed beating them 3-2 I think in the "Alan Freeland" game after I told Mark Venus that Freeland had failed to send off one of their players after booking him twice ;-) and Mark pulled the twat up on it.

Falkirk's brutal physical football isn't just a Houston invention it goes way way back as far as I can remember, with a certain SAF breaking Alex Cropley's ankle.

Millennium derby - Was only in Primary 7 at the time but remember it well! Absolutely destroyed them that night - we have some record against them in evening kick off matches!
Rangers 0-3 Hibs - Scottish cup - unbelievable day, massive support, couldnt get much better!
Rangers 0-3 Hibs - Sproule hat trick - On the train through my mate actually said for a laugh that Ivan would score a hat trick that day!
AEK game - special night and atmosphere - very unlucky in the end!

Special mentions to:

Kilmarnock 2-4 Hibs - Scottish cup quarter final - superb crowd and unbelievable atmosphere
Celtic 1-3 Hibs - Scott Brown's sealer was different class - some day that!

A few immediately come to mind -

5-1 League cup final
3-0 Ibrox cup win
2-0 ER Derby 2005 - My first ever derby win I had witnessed in the flesh (embarrassing as I was 24 but 13 years in England and bad luck with the Derbies I had been up for created that record)
4-3 Falkirk Semi Final
2-2 Derby - Not necessarily celebrating a draw, but the fact we came back from 2 goals down away to our rivals who were a division above. We obviously didn't know where that comeback was gonna take us but the celebrations were superb.

The 91 Skol cup semi final against Rangers (remember them?) at Hampden.

We already knew that Dunfermline were the other finalists and, daft as at might sound, for me it was the semi final that won us the cup.

Along with the majoirty of the support at the final, I was probably too nervous to really enjoy it.

Game was stopped and we lost our way a bit allowing Celtic to draw level. However, Ned and Pat got us going again allowing us to win 5-3. There are many great games I've been to over the years. A lot of them already mentioned. 0-7, 6-2, 5-1 (Killie), etc

Stand outs for me though are European games. Napoli 5-0, Sporting Lisbon 6-1 and, although we didn't win the tie, the Leeds 0-0 game stands out because we were so close in turning them over

Never made the AEK Athens game as was on holiday in US at the time. Couldn't get home as scheduled due to delays with flights after 9/11. It's probably the one game I've regretted most having missed, when I read all that is said about the atmosphere on the night. Have watched the video but it's never the same as being there.

The game at Swiney when Geebsie put an end to their unbeaten run- what a wonderful feeling that was. Mental celebrations in our old standing end of the dump.

6-2 game. Utter class.

For noise and spectacle, the 0-3 cup game at Ibrox, for youthful enjoyment, the 0-7 game at Tynie and for sheer being mental (it was back in the day!) the 0-0 at Elland Road v Leeds. Still managed to make college the next day!

A cool threesome if I may say so.:cb

Good pedigree Sir:aok:

Was having a discussion with a pal the other night about best Hibs game I have ever been to before Scottish cup final, been to some very dull and forgettable games but also some very good ones. 6-2 vs them comes to mind even the 2-2 at Tynecastle was great. I'm too young to have been at 7-0 however.

What is everyone's favourite hibs game before Scottish cup final? What are your earliest memories of Easter Road?

I was at all three of those fantastic games.
FWIW, Paddy scored the goal that ended the Aberdeen shutout. The Baker Boy 'scored' doon-the-slope first but it was ruled offside though I can't remember if he was or not.
The Aberdeen game was the first game I can remember being at .

3-0 at ibrox in the cup. The Broomloan was shaking!

Definitely between this, the AEK game or the semi of the Skol cup when we won it in 91. Just an awesome atmosphere.

6-2 v them
5-1 v Killie CIS Cup final
3-2 AEK
3-0 v Rangers at Ibrox in the Scottish Cup

Apart from Gray's winner last May, the most nuts I've went when we scored was O'Connor's last minute winner against Hearts at Easter Road after Brebner got sent off in the first half for next to nothing! We won 1-0 it might have been the first game of the season, Blobby was manager.

Rangers at Ibrox 11th October 1969, my dad, a Rangers fan took me to the game. We won 1-3.

The day I became a Hibbie!

My first visit to Ibrox, went with a Rangers supporting school pal. Peter Marinello x2 & Joe McBride made it a memorable day. This victory put us at the top of the league, we had already won 2-1 at Parkhead and 2-0 at Tynie.

I love the european away games, some of those trips are just the best days of my life. Although for pure pleasure because of the way we played, it has to be the Sporting Lisbon game for me.

That performance from Hibs was the best i have ever seen us play EVER.

I also remember a game against Dundee in the Scottish Cup at easter road, where we drew 3-3, that was a different game than the Sporting game, but it was end to end and so exciting.

The game must have been good, as both my parents and grandparents along with me went to the replay, that never happened in those days in my family.

We were pumped 3-0. :greengrin

For the benefit of all you youngsters out there, we lost 4-1 away and in return won 5-0 at home. Duncan, our right back, when we were shooting " upill" first half scored from almost the half way line against Dino Zoff considered by many as the best keeper imn the world at that time

Sporting Lisbon 6-1. Blew away what was meant to be one of the best sides around. 3-0 against Hertz in mid seventies when Joe Harper scored a screamer. Could have won by 7 it was so one sided.

Last years semi edges it.

The whole Logan debut thing with the one-on-ones and penalty saves, Jason going from the ridiculous to the sublime...

I didn't think we'd win but there was a feeling of destiny afterwards.

5-1 win away to motherwell about 10 year ago, certainly one of the best performances I've seen us put in Its hard to pick and judge. Performance.Atmosphere
Guts. Result. Wasnt at well game but many talk about and the dieder agathe show v dundee was also a sensation performance by Hibs with great goals. Game v Hearts Riorden pen 0-1( hardly a team to put out and written off before whistle ) is other end of spectrum along with GOC(10 men most game) last minute winner where Hibs took victory. For sheer enjoyment and day as a whole 0-3 in front of 7000k hibees at ibrox was truely special.

2-0 v Aberdeen back in 93/94. Danny Lennon scored. I think I've got the score right, what I DO remember is that it was one of the most exciting matches I'd seen at that point and I had total confidence that we'd win.

I hadn't been going long enough to fully get the significance of the Gordon Hunter header at Tynie...but what a walk back from a match! I don't know what it was like leaving Hampden last May, but that must have been amazing given how superb it felt after that derby win.

2-1 Scottish Cup semi final against Aberdeen in 2012. Shame what happened in the game after but it was a team that shouldn't have gotten that far, Rory Fallon's wondergoal for an equaliser then Sparky calmly slotting home. Not the best game of football but brilliant atmosphere and a real surprise.

Amen to that
These guys were " real" legends :hibees

This game for me too.
Barca were the undisputed kings of Europe at the time. They had just knocked Real Madrid out of the European Cup to end their 5 year winning streak. They were champions of Spain. The 4-4 draw in Spain was an incredible result and coiuld have been even better.
Hibs were fantastic that night at ER and I have never known an atmosphere like that anywhere, ever, at least until May last year :greengrin

My top three are probably 6-2 derby, Ivan hat-trick game but the best of all has to be the 91 Skol Cup semi. That was a millionaire star studded hun team and it was a fantastic achievement to do them in Glasgow just a year after Mercer tried to kill us.

Yep, great game, start of the Souness revolution, Butcher, Colin West and Chris Woods bought for big money, Hibs supposed cannon fodder, first game of the season, beautiful sunny day, Hibs score first, Gers equalise through a dodgy penalty, Cowan puts Hibs back in front, Souness assaults George McCluskey in a rage, 21 man mellee (roughy didn't get involved) before Souness was shown a straight red! Still one of the best games I've seen even after all these years.

So hard to get in, in time for the game that I remember guys leaning over the huge wall shouting, gies half a dollar, and we'll pull ye up! actually saw folk getting a hoist up, to catch the guys' hands and get over the wall. by the time we got in, I am sure we were a goal down.not a bad Dee side at the time

91 league cup semi. My first hibs game at hampden and the night a lot of us realised we had a worthy side again after a grim few years. I'll never forget the moment Weir chipped the ball onto Keiths head. Possibly my favorite ever goal too actually because of the enormity at the time.

Totally agree. The rest of the game after the goal I was so nervous I felt sick

2-1 derby win in October 94 in stripey sleeves. I wasn't at the Geebsie derby so this was the first time I'd seen us beat them in years. Michael O'Neill scored what turned out to be the winner.

Likewise. I must have watched the highlights of that game hundreds of times. Always remember Jock Brown saying "O'Neil rises early and headers it downwards, that was correct". Like there's an incorrect way to score a goal????
