Lunatics. You think of some of the folk in their midsts: David Coburn, Farage, Misty Thackaray, Paul Nuttals of the UKIPs. Carswell actually looks normal and comes out with some pretty middle of the road stuff, particularly in relation to immigration.

Funnily enough though, they have extracted maximum impact from minimal electoral success. The Brexit referendum was brought about through the Tories fear of losing votes to UKIP, as well as a great number of that party finding a lot of common ground with them on immigration, the EU and such like.

I have always thought that the BBC are culpable for providing them with far more coverage than they deserve. But I suppose if they are a party filled with cracks, nuttals and weirdos, they're pretty hard to ignore.

They got 13% of the vote in the last election. Not sure how the FPTP system conceals the real level of support up or down but Brexit suggests it might be higher.

Imagine what it would be if they had fewer wacky personalities and better branding generally.

There must be a reason the Tories "panicked". Presumably they were looking at (internal) polling.

Don't you love the FPTP system, UKIP got 1 seat on 12.8% of the vote, The Green Party got 1 seat on 3.8% of the vote. Lib dems got 8 seats on 7.9% of the vote and the SNP got 56 seats on 4.7% of the vote.

FPTP is an outdated system and it's time for some form of proportional representation but again there are several different forms of this which is probably a different debate

It is crazy but to be fair the SNP advocates a PR system at all elections. They're not going to complain about the last one though!
