Very sorry to hear this.

I first saw him in 'I, Claudius' where he played Caligula - very camp, way OTT, extremely funny and totally convincingly terrifying.

He was brilliant as Quentin Crisp in 'The Naked Civil Servant', too. Wonderful actor - he was advised not to take the Quentin Crisp role as it would be a 'career-stopper'. (Gay subjects not appreciated back in the day.) He said that it wasn't about being gay as such - it was about the brutality of the 'many' towards the 'one' - and did it, and it was a triumph.

He was a brilliant actor and a very good man, IMO.

He was great at playing men under stress. His face showed fear and confusion like no other. I am thinking of 10 Rillington Place with the brilliant Richard Attenborough. Also the adaptation of Orwell's 1984.
