The cuts to local sevices are becoming increasingly obvious because of the council tax freeze. I've been a long time critic of the SNPs desire to 'borrow' elements of social policy from Scandanavia without wishing to raise taxation to pay for it. That money doesn't come from nowhere and for every baby box given out money is cut from elsewhere, potentially from those who really need it.

It's the fundemental problem with trying to be popular with everybody.

I would like to see them rise, and above inflation, perhaps index linked. I will retire from Local Government soon, but the level of services have been falling for far too long.

What do I get for what I pay now? The services are and were pish for a long time prior to now.

I need to read more about the pros and cons of a land value tax but I'm not really getting the difference to council tax in their current proposal. Is the net effect not the same as creating more council tax bands and updating valuations?

The owner pays concept sounds good but in reality that cost will just be passed directly to a tenant so not sure it would make any difference in the real world.

No that's why I asked how you would vote if given the chance here. Raising taxes is never popular, but councils would do it if given a mandate to do so.

It's a context specific question I guess.

Having recently left Surrey, if they had this referendum when I was there, I'd have voted against it.

The cost of living down there is astronomical, and you pay for everything at a premium. Adding 15% to the council tax across the board will particularly hurt those already struggling to make ends meet.

The problem with that is it misses those who are capital or asset 'rich'...it's partly the focus on income that is the underlying problem with the current taxation regime.
