Really pleased to see the 4-2-3-1 tonight. Been hoping for this exact formation for ages!

Back 4 then 2 deeper midfielders, one a ball winner holding (Marvin) and one box to box (Dylan) then 2 quick wingers, a creative attacking midfielder with a goalscorer up top.

Well pleased!

Reminded me of a Martin O'Neil Celtic set up.

Boyle and Humphrey on the wings were a joy to watch and really opened things up in the middle creating channels for Cummings and Commons, with Dylan and Marv bossing the midfield.

Very pleasing indeed.

Let's no over complicate it, it was a good old fashioned 442 with a paced winger on each side, exactly how teams should set up.

None of this 4132, 5212, 3151

It was a simple 442

It was a simple 442It pretty clearly wasn't a 442, not even close. 442 needs 2 strikers.

4-4-1-1/4-2-3-1

Maybe the first one but not the 4231.

Championship manager has a lot to answer for like.

Looked like 4-5-1 to me with two wing forwards rather than wing backs

A 4411 is a 442, the 11 are 2 strikers 1 of which is a old fashioned number 10 that sits behind the number 9.

That's still a 442

The latter.

I'm glad Lennon turned up the high press, tempo and aggression as well.

Only the players know what the actual instructions were, but to me it looked like a 442 with Commons given leeway to drop back into the hole.

But who gives a ****, it was magic. 2nd best team in Scotland:giruy2:

Whatever it was it was players playing in positions they were comfortable in and a shape that gave us cover in all areas both attacking and defending. Lennon said Jason was playing up front on his own so that might rule 442 out. The big difference was pace out wide.

Whatever the formation, Lennon got it spot on. And what joy to see wingers doing the business down both flanks. Boyle and Humphreys were almost relentless in getting their heads down and speeding for the bye line or into the box.. I really thought I would never see the day ever again at ER.
Inspirational stuff!

The plans of the V2 finally arrived at ER and turns out it is rocket science after all. :cool2:

This, it's just simple pleasing stuff. I tell my 8 year old to do it. If you've got pace, (which he has), then use it! It's not rocket science. Works for 8 year olds, works for Hibs.

I think if u were to ask Jason if he was playing up top on his own tonight, I'm fairly confident he would say yes.

Commons was helping out more in midfield than he was helping Jason which says to me we set up as 4-5-1

At times I felt like we were playing a footballing version of the Phil Jackson Triangle Offense.

I think we finally might have cracked the code to break down teams that flood the middle and the defence. We can afford to go wide, because that threat also gives our midfielders more room to operate. We've been moaning that we have often struggled to break down teams at ER. Now I think we have the personnel to really turn over some teams at home, and I'm looking forward to a few big wins and plenty goals at ER now.

Having two proper wingers made our back four look more solid than it has been for a long time as gray and Lewis could concentrate on defending instead of relying on them to supply crosses to the strikers. They weren't caught out of position once last night.

Hope he sticks with it!

It was a 451. As explained to the players. Commons just pushed up to support.

Interesting that of all the possible formations talked about on here prematch, the one Lennon came up with had not been mentioned. Moving to 1 up front (I don't buy that Commons was playing up front, he was too deep for that) allowed us to maintain strength in midfield while also exploiting pace on the wings. I can see us lifting our goal scoring rate now with this set up.

451/433.

Mcgeouch Bartley

Commons

Humphrey Cummings Boyle

Probably more of a 451 with how deep Humphrey and Boyle went to support the defence at times

Thought it was very fluid whatever the formation was liked how both humphrey and Boyle dropped back when we were defending and like wise offered an out ball when required. With Humphrey I do worry we will have an agathe situation on our hands in that plays a blinder and we lose him because of the short contract.

Let's worry about that once we are promoted. He's 29 so the very biggest clubs won't be interested.

That's a really good point as well. All the plaudits are going to the attacking players but Laidlaw made what, one save?

Gray and Stevenson have taken stick but think most of it was correctly pointing out their limitations going forward meant they shouldn't be our only attacking outlets on the wings.

Let them get on with the defensive work and they look solid as a rock.

It was unreal how much more balanced we looked and how much more comfortable the team were as they were not being asked to do something beyond their abilities.

Happy to see the full backs getting forward sometimes to offer support but they should never be asked to provide our main threat out wide.

And it didn't seem to worry him playing against a giant defender. I think (right foot aside 😁😁) that Jase had a great strikers game last night. 2 goals, some great link up play, the one he tried to dink to Commons 2nd half was genius.
