Not just films, but the Dick Van Dyke show was massive in the 60s and 70s.

He turned down a lot of roles in films that he thought were too risqué or violent (eg. he was offered Gregory Peck's role in The Omen).

DVD Show was required viewing in the sixties. Mary Tyler Moore was his co - star. It dwelt on the little challenges of domesticity but DVD himself was obviously quite a madcap. He read the eulogy at Stan Laurel's funeral.
