First manager when I went to my first game was Alex Miller in 1992.

Started going every home match when I was about 7 so would've been under Jim Duffy.

Started home and away most weeks under Mowbray/ Collins.

He remains the only Hibs manager that I've ever wanted removed from his position at the time, even though he's not even close to be being the worst manager we've had in my time watching Hibs. I just thought he'd been there too long and that it had all gone a bit stale.

Although there are several since who I have accepted with hindsight it was best for them to go (Duffy, Calderwood, Butcher).

I was born 2 months prior to Willie McCartney's death although Hugh Shaw was the manager by the time I started going to ER.
McCartney built the "famous five" team which won 3 league championships but unfortunately died before they actually got their hands on the trophies.

Remarkably he spent 16 years as manager of Hearts before coming to ER. Didn't manage to build a league winning side at what was at that time the grey bus shelter. Pity that :greengrin

Only with hindsight?

Yes.

Seriously.

I remember applauding him vociferously as he came onto the park to celebrate the win in the first leg of the playoff.

Our drop was so drastic we were down before I really knew what had happened.

There were clearly problems but he had been there so little time it would have seemed like madness if we'd have punted him.

Relegation seemed unthinkable with about 5 or 6 games to go.

Although as I said, with the benefit of hindsight.........

Alex McLeish was in charge when I came up to look for a flat at the end of November 2001 - I remember him saying in the papers that week that he wasn't going to leave for Rangers. By the time I moved up in mid-December, he'd left for Rangers and Franck was in the hot seat. By the time I actually dragged my ar$e to a game at the start of the next season, Bobby Williamson was in charge for a 1-0 win against Livi with Ian Murray bagging the only goal. ****, that team was dull.

Alan Stubbs. Remember it well. I had been a Celtic fanatic, and although I'd never been to Parkhead (shucks, my bad folks) I always bought the latest strip and loved watching them on TV, especially Champions League games. Then, and it was on May 21st, funny how the date sticks in my mind, I decided that i'd switch to Hibs. No particular reason - I'd always liked the strip and thought people would think I had some soul and substance if I supported the club of my local community. So here I am! Never looked back once! Now I'm such a fanatic that when I sing Sunshine on Leith I sing 'my beep was broken...' cause real Hibs fans NEVER say that word.

Alex McLeish for me. First season was the 2000/01 season as a 6/7 year old. We won most weeks, played great football, were 2nd for much of the season before finishing third by some distance, reached the Scottish Cup final and beat Hearts 6-2 in my first Edinburgh derby and I assumed that's how it would always be.

Then Latapy went out on the lash with Dwight Yorke, McLeish ran off to Rangers and Sauzee was sacked after a few months and life got real haha

Looks like I could be wrong (not unusual these days!) The best I can come up with is that he held the role of "trainer " for a couple of years before he moved to Dumbarton where he held the post of Manager for a year.

I've absolutely no idea why his name came into my head though.

Anyway, I was just going to put Turnbull (around 70/71) as I always believed I had lost my football virginity sometime during the mighty Tornadoes era. But, I checked and realised I may have attended my first games during the short reign of Davey Ewing! I can't remember my first game 9i was around 5/6 but what is interesting for me, is that Jock Stein took over Hibs the month I was born and left for Celtic on the very day of my first birthday.

Willie had the team playing brilliant stuff. We were due to play Liverpool in the Fairs Cup at ER. Something happened (with a female employee ?) and the new chairman Tom Hart wanted, I think, Johnny Graham and Joe McBride dropped. Willie stood his ground and Hart sacked him. Brought in Dave (rangers are rubbish) Ewing and then ET. This may be complete rubbish but was the story going round at the time.

School memories of managers...

Since my first game was 1963 at the age of 4, it was Walter Galbraith. But I don't remember anything at all about him or Stein.

My first awareness of a manager was Bob Shankly who was in the songs I had started to learn.

Willie MacFarlane then made me realise that managers were important - he seemed a real character and beat the old firm in all meetings in the same season. I remember he was overlooked for a Manager Of The Month award (which was a giant bottle of whisky) after a series of great performances and results and we sang "Willie wants his whisky" in the playground.!

Yes, as was mentioned earlier Dave Ewing made that famous 'Rangers are rubbish' quote which completely outraged the press.

And then Eddie Turnbull - ahh, you just wanted to wear your Hibs scarf to school at every opportunity in those days. Cannot emphasise enough to our younger fans just how utterly diminished and fearful the drab Yams were by Turnbull and his glamorous brilliant team in those years.
