Good news for the North East of England.

Fundamentally, as I understand it, and as it was explained to me last week, what's happened is that they've agreed with the government that the UK taxpayer will pick up any tariffs which may be imposed on their exports because of Brexit.

So, in effect, we'll still be paying the EU to trade with it.

And there was me hoping an extra £350m a week would go to the NHS.

The compensation package ensures Nissan can't lose out which ensures that they will continue to operate in the NE of England and allows WM to crow about how brexit isn't having any effect on britain. It's all smoke and mirrors although the fact that it means 9000 workers dont lose their jobs so that has to be a good thing.

Let's hope every firm affected by tariffs get the same deal.

Not sure anyone knows the 'deal'...although clearly some assurances have been given.

It was though a bit of a bluff from Nissan and I'm sure the UK government knew that. The cost of moving production would have been enormous so it was always likely that Nissan would continue to build and invest in a plant that has been extremely successful for them.

Again though I'm struck at how people turn things to their own agenda (not aimed at the Op btw). People have demanded governments intervene to save steel works etc for years and now when a government does take steps to secure a large inward investment and secure jobs it's now a bad thing or at the very least underhand or preferential.

Most on here will know my thoughts on government intervention so I'm not singing any praises at the thought of it but surely there will be some on here that will welcome the removal of EU state aid rules (routinely flaunted when it suited the French of course) and the freedom the UK will have to do such deals when it wants to in the future?

You're right, they won't because ultimately it's tax payers who will foot the bill and there isn't enough to go round. I want to stay in the EU and in the single market but I'm pretty sure that it isn't going to happen in the UK and all the bluster from Theresa May that she is going to get "The best deal possible" means absolutely nothing because that best deal might be complete rubbish.

It seems ironic given that Yorkshire and the Humber, Tyne and Wear and the rest of the North East has the lowest migration in the UK. Indeed, Tyne and Wear is the only place where migration has fallen over the past 5 years.

It's the same over here in Germany. The areas where there are the least migrants are the ones that make the biggest fuss about migration. The word ignorance describes it perfectly.
