View Full Version : Creepy Clown Prank

East Lothian Courier is reporting that 2 youngsters were chased at Musselburgh race course yesterday, and they also mention similar incidents in Tranent. I have a 5 yr old, and I live in Musselburgh, so I've warned him and his mum that these idiots are about, and not to be scared. This prank started in America and has spread here through social media. It appears to be teenagers carrying it out, and as yet no one has been physically harmed - if I catch one scaring my son, that will change. Has anyone heard about this in their area?

Yeah a school in my area had to put a warning up on their noticeboard. There is a woodland area nearby and there have been some of these "pranksters" spotted.

This.

They will scare the wrong child and someone's Dad is going on a clown hunt.

My 5 year old daughter asked me about it this morning. She said that evil clowns were killing people in the forest. I had to reassure her it wasn't true. If any of them try it around us they will be the ones who end up being scared.

I always found clowns a bit sinister. Probably comes from watching too much of The Avengers on tv in the 60s where clowns frequently seemed to carry out bizarre crimes. Batman's villains were clownish also.

They are just clowning around having a laugh. Embrace the spirit of the whole thing and laugh hilariously as you deck the first one that attempts to scare you or your children.

It's completely irresponsible, particularly if carrying weapons, and someone is going to get seriously hurt.

Yes its staged. I have seen lots of prank shows where people get a fright and it is usually funny.

A clown hiding behind a wall in a busy public street jumping out is not that bad in my opinion.

Hiding in a wooded/secluded area and chasing the people with a weapon (Real of fake) is taking it a step too far. And I, like others will be making sure any wee dick who attempts this on me or my family will not be doing it again.

I think anybody hanging around dark wooded areas at night (or even on a busy street in daylight) attempting to scare people is risking a severe doing if they pick on the wrong person.

I have a female friend who is genuinely terrified of clowns, she will not go near any event where clowns are likely to be present like kids birthday parties. If one of these prats jumped out at her there is a real chance she could end up in bloody hospital.

Though its not officially recognized as a phobia there is anecdotal evidence that 'Coulrophobia' ( the fear of clowns ) is certainly close to being accepted as a genuine condition ..... Time for these people to grow up and realise that their 'antics' could actually harm someones health, like a few folk on here I'm firmly in the boot in the baws camp.

Im not as bad as your friend but i do think ahead if we go places theres a possibility of a clown and am always on edge. Its not just clowns though, its masks in general too so halloween is going to be fab!

I was out running tonight and there was one fairly short bit with loads of trees and i was terrified one of these idiots would step out in front of me. Im not sure i would run away. I think my fear would put me into fight mode. That wouldnt be pretty :)

My wife is petrified of clowns and Chuckie dolls. She was made to go into a haunted house type thing with her brother and dad in a California theme park several years ago. There were apparently shelves of Chuckie dolls and one then jumped out on her chasing her with a chainsaw. The chuckie doll actor had to get an employee to take her out the fire escape due to her reaction :) Whereas I love horror fiction and horror movies etc

I live in Musselburgh and heard about the whole clown thing. I have a 3yr old daughter and if any idiot jumps out on us they'll regret it.

What I found more worrying was I was at the side of the race course on Sunday kicking a ball with my daughter when 3 boys (ages 7 or 8) cycle over on their bikes shouting we're going to kill you, enjoy your last moments before we kill you. The wee *****s never expected the reaction they got and were quickly cycling off. No idea what sort of up bringing you must have to come out with such stuff at that age.

Its no more irrational than a fear of spiders or balloons or birds or or or ...if its a fear its a fear. Someone standing staring at you in the dark dressed as an evil character carrying a knife isnt that far a stretch for being scared though id have thought :)

I think you touch upon a really interesting point.

It's a classic debate about human behaviour - how much is nature and how much is nurture i.e. how much of what we do is down to genetics and our inner wiring and how much is down to us responding to what we observe and pick up from being exposed to influences, whether they are our parents, our friends, school, work or social media :greengrin

With spiders, I can see the argument for it being something hardwired into our DNA - going by generally-accepted theories of evolution, we developed as a species alongside some seriously dangerous creatures, spiders included. On the other hand, in 21st century UK we're not really at serious risk from spiders but no doubt most people know someone who will describe themselves as terrified of spiders and insist on stamping on them (or getting someone else to deal with it) and that gets passed on. Whether it's justified or not, I guess the feeling is real for those afflicted.

As for clowns, there's an obvious argument for it being a nurture thing - Stephen King's "It" has a lot to answer for, but that worked because it must have tapped into something that was already there. Part of that may be the make-up - the classic clown face is white, it's pallid - the same as a corpse. I think we are predisposed to recoil from death and decay, hence why no one likes bluebottles or the smell of the rubbish tip. Clowns have deathly faces with a touch of grotesque make-up and a smile - no bloody wonder people get terrified :greengrin

Interesting stuff. Never thought about the fear of clowns in that way.

Your post also contains the reason why the human foot can withstand tough terrain yet still be extremely sensitive to delicate touches. We are programmed to naturally react whenever something dangerous touches our foot such as a clown with a feather. :agree:

Im not scared of spiders, quite the opposite, i think they are beautiful creatures.

My clown fear doesnt come from the films, they just proved my point! I had a fear of clowns as a very young child, I could never get my head round why we were supposed to laugh at people with painted smiles. It was all very sinister, i also dont like balloons and i think thats linked to the clowns.

Another of my friends has a sister who is mentally disabled and she is terrified and I mean 'terrified' of balloons as I found out one day when I was at a party she was at and started blowing one up, the poor lassie immediately burst into tears. Its a funny old world

Front page and headlines in today's Cambridge paper, looks like it will be a wee craze for a bit. Polis probably got more to worry about than a wee *****e in a costume but can see vigilantes getting amongst it and hard to argue against that if it's your family involved

That's shocking. Even if the P7 is just a child themselves, you know at that age that it's wrong to say such a thing to an even younger child.

Such a horrible thing to say.
