I Knew Sam well about 35/40 years ago but had no idea about his remarkable life pre Edinburgh. What a great man!

Just shows that many 'ordinary' lives are extraordinary stories.

Great read.

What a life Sam had, its a shame he never wrote a book I'm betting it would have been a hell of a good read. Sometimes the most ordinary people are the ones with the most extraordinary stories. My late wife's uncle was Belgian and the most understated mild mannered we guy you could ever meet, at his funeral I found out he was a war hero and the story of how he became one would have made a great film.

RIP Sam

Christ, great read, not an emotional person by any means but what he said about his late wife was just fantastic, had a cold hearted man with a lump in his throat- great story, unbelievable man. RIP Sam

He arrived as a 32 year old determined to fight hitler.

Kind of brings home the longevity.
