Yeh, he was good but his family and associates seem to think he wrote ever song from the 60s on.

When rock&roll is based on 3 chords and 12 bars, I'm surprised there's not more of this stuff.

If people had been so litigous in the 60's, the Stones and Beatles would have never made it far :greengrin

I see led zepp won the court case claiming they had ripped off a spirit song. Maybe so but them and stones etc did claim a lot of blues songs for themselves, i do have lots of zep and stones music but after digging deeper into the source of the music you can hear it.

Yep, but they had to pay their own costs. Bizarre.

Me too. Regardless of what you think of the song "Blurred Lines", the idea it was a "rip-off" of the Marvin Gaye song (as decided by the court) was laughable IMO.

Everything is influenced by something else. If you stop that then you stop creativity.

Indeed.

If you think Marvin's relatives and associates are bad, just wait until Nile Rodgers goes broke or dies...... :greengrin

Absolutely, i remember someone really slagging off Gabrielle for Rise based on Dylan's Heaven's Door and totally not accepting the Bob had used many an existing tune to add lyrics too. Again massive fan of Bob but you cant deny he's robbed a tune or two! Music evolves as does most art but you always use the masters for guidance

Damian Hirst made a fortune selling a picture of coloured in circles. He quite obviously used to hang about Murrayburn primary and look in the windows, I did loads of coloured in circles as a bairn.

Speaking of Ed Sheerin, it's hands up time when it comes to that Matt Cardle song. I'm not sure it's worth any more than an acknowledgement though and certainly not $20 million.

If someone puts notes in a certain sequence within a song is that it? They "own" that sequence? There are only so many notes and so many sequences that sound acceptable so it can't be good for musical creativity in general if people are wary of this.

There's a whole website dedicated to this.

Some comparisons are debatable but others seem to be spot on.

It's almost impossible to be original in music anymore. You learn by playing other peoples compositions. You improve by playing other peoples compositions. When it comes to composing your own music there are so many influences whirling round your brain that you can be plagiarising without knowing it.

And as far as more recent cases are concerned it's easier to recognise if your older and heard the "original" first.

That's right and also as noted above most popular music follows some sort of blues progression. Even if it doesn't there are only certain chords that work in particular keys and they tend to work best in certain patterns. Once you get on to lead patterns for guitar for example above that then again you are limited to the scales and notes that match that key. There are only so many chords and notes that work!

It's the same with everything, using the logic of the music plagiarism argument, the guy who invented the wheel could claim credit for inventing the automobile.

As I was told by my professor when I was studying for my chemistry degree many moons ago. Stealing one person's work is plagiarism and stealing many people's work is research 😎 !
