I would say the definition of a scottish band is one that formed in Scotland or consists mostly of scots. There are a few that blur that definition of course, like snow patrol for example. Formed in scotland by northern irishmen but always based in scotland and later to include Scottish members. You'd have a tough time arguing that they're Scottish in Belfast or Bangor though :greengrin

The Skids, Big Country (earlier stuff only, though).

I like the reply to the question about what counts as a Scottish band. Lloyd Cole and the Commotions would fit in to that and Big Country need to rely on the rule to qualify! If we could stretch it all the way out, we could claim Talking Heads and (getting really desperate here) if the parentage rule applied we could argue White Stripes. Typical Scottish so-near-yet-so-far glorious failure - if we could claim those two we'd be world class!

All Scottish band members I would go for Biffy Clyro

Based on Scottish born members

AC/DC - could say the most successful Scottish band ever due to Angus, Malcolm & Bonn being Scottish born
Talking Heads - David Byrne
Primal Scream
Dire Straits - Knopfler brothers

As some of you know, I am not unbiased when it comes to B & S :cb but I remember an interview Stuart Murdoch gave when Franz Ferdinand (who supported B & S on their UK tour in 2002/3) rocketed to international success with "Take me Out" and their first album in general. Murdoch was asked how he felt about this, given that they had been slogging away for years with limited chart success only to see one of their support bands woosh past them like that. He replied that he was delighted for them, but added "we'll see them at the finish line". And that was a neat summing up, I think. History and posterity will one day judge and value B & S's whole body of work for the enormous achievement that it is.

It's only right that B+S got a good mention, they've repeatedly given us things of beauty.

As far as other bands go, I'm surprised, maybe it's an age thing, but no mention of Lloyd Cole and The Commotions.

Some exquisite songs and the excuse to indulge in referencing all the French poetry you never actually read and all the classic 50s Hollywood films you'd never seen :greengrin

Growing up in the 80s they were a lifebelt :agree:

Missed that, cheers.

If we are stretching the rules to the utmost, then Talking Heads skoosh it for me, but in the spirit of things they can't really be considered Scottish.

While I wouldn't put them up as contenders, Hipsway, Goodbye Mr Mackenzie and Love and Money were favourites in my younger days. Teenage Fanclub another.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Deacon Blue, I thought they were incredibly popular, in a sort of 'you wouldn't admit it' way.

Seen billy McKenzie on totp last week. What a genius, and party fears two may well be the best Scottish single of all time. I particularly liked beyond the sun released just before his untimely death nearly 20 years ago.
