Chin up big man. We don't blame you - we're proud of your effort, monumental shift the night and in the last leg. Keep that up and it's going to be a cracking season.

If anything should he praised for taking a penalty. I wouldn't have given him one he was dead on his feet

No hard feelings, him and the rest of the squad have done us proud

He was superb over 2 legs. Didn't deserve that ending tonight but he'll be back better than ever.

I thought he was poor defensively tonight but I certainly don't blame him for the defeat.

He was a big part of why we were in Europe in the first place so there's no blame from me.

The Captain....

The lad ran himself into the ground (not for the first or last time no doubt). I have nothing but pride and admiration for every player on that pitch tonight. They gave it their all, and ultimately we were beaten by the poor Spanish officials decisions in the first leg. That was the difference.

No buts.

It's amazing how the 120 minute hero often ****s up.

Still our main man.

Stepped up 1st away fi home to take a pen. Cannot fault the lad in the slightest. Arguably the most talented player on the pitch over 2 ties.

What a player we've got on our hands. Would genuinely offer him a new contract and make him the highest paid player at the club and show a sign of intent (along wi Cummings and Hanlon committing to Hibs) we mean business. We're not just coming up to survive We're coming up to challenge the "best teams in the country"

His attitude, determination and drive is phenomenal.

I would never blame anyone for missing a penalty, he hit the target and the keeper guessed right. If the keeper had dived the oher way it would have been in, it just wasn't to be. Hope he puts it behind him quickly as he's a great player and will do brilliant for us this season. proud of all of them tonight.

penalties are lotteries. Big deal. I'm so proud of our team tonight. We only lost due to that dodgy spanish ref in the first leg.

Heads high and proud boys!

He's posted an apology on Twitter.

Thankfully the responses have been unanimously positive.

The very best players in the world miss penalty kicks occasionally.

I just wish there was another better way of deciding matches, rather than penalty kicks.

I wouldn't recommend him as a penalty taker but we weren't spoilt for choice so fair play.

I feel for the lad, last thing he needs to feel is to have to apologise for trying to do his best but not getting the result. We win and lose as a team. Unfortunately the way the world works now if he didn't "acknowledge" it on twitter, someone is going to get mad.

No one who has the stones to step up should ever apologise for missing a pen.

Cant believe he felt he had to apologise .... 100% effort 100% of the time and that effort is backed up by very good play, which will only get better ... a great player who I'm glad plays for us. We don't call you 'super John McGinn' for nothing mate ... chin up, there's a league to win and players like you are going to help us do it.

Absolutely no disgrace given tonight's performance. Just unlucky. No fault of Super John.

To put in perspective:
1) We were only one of two teams from a lower division, other than country's top league in the competition. Zurich were the other. Acquitted ourselves well.
2) Ultimately went out (can't use the word 'beaten') to a team who have a bit of recent European pedigree
3) we almost became only the 3rd Scottish club to go through in a European tie after getting beat in the first leg. Almost some achievement.
4) all of the above done with an pretty much unchanged squad from last season. When Lennon brings in some named players to bolster the squad ( surely he must be on the case to do that?), we'll benefit from this over the season.

Pat Stanton missed the first when we lost to Leeds United and it's not really affected his place in our history. Great performance from the whole team tonight

Messi, Ronaldo and McGinn have missed penalties this summer. Shows how much is down to luck and even great players can miss.

Penalties are a lottery. He is a great talent and player for us and no apologies needed

It speaks volumes for McGinn's character and personal standards that he feels the need to apologise despite the fact that he has nothing to apologise for.

He's a superb player for us and their keeper guessing correctly last night doesn't change that.

A slight adaptation of the two Warburton songs I've heard so far just for Super John McGinn

Oh, Warburton's a fanny, he wears a fannies hat
He could have won the Scottish, He made a c*** of that
And now it is the Hibees, in action once again
We're going to win the league, cause we've got John McGinn

Outstanding performance and bottle shown by McGinn. Especially given that we're still effectively in our pre-season phase as regards match fitness.

I thought it was the last one?

But your point remains totally valid - anyone can miss a penalty; not everyone has the guts to step up to take one.

We'll just have to qualify again for next season, and I'm sure he'll score no bother at all.

**** happens, especially in the lottery of a penalty shoot-out.

It was the first - I must admit my memory isn't brilliant so had to check!

The first leg at Elland Road was my first away venture in Europe. Not too far and I made it back for school the next morning!
