So Icelands population is roughly that of Edinburgh, can anyone think of a team of players from Edinburgh to play them? It's actually incredible how organised a team they are when you think about

They have players that play in the Bundesliga, Premiership, Serie A and Ligue 1 in France. They are a good team and they are fit as.

Can't question their fitness. To fully concentrate and defend for that time takes very good fitness levels and application

Wonder how many of tonight's squad played against Scotland under 21's, in a euro play off at Easter Rd a few years ago

I remember Gylfi Sigurdsson playing that day. He was sensational.

It was mentioned earlier on this thread, and even after Iceland Women defeated Scotland at the beginning of the month, that the whole setup in Iceland was revamped a few years ago. Just look at the results.

Think one of their top coaches spoke at an SFA conference fairly recently. Their key was investing in indoor facilities, think it is government funded

Didn't one of the Scottish boys score from halfway in that game as well?

Chris McGuire then of Aberdeen scored from kick off. Iceland U21 were unbelievable that night.

Edinburgh XI:

GK: Craig Gordon

RB: David Gray
CB: Paul Hanlon
CB: Christophe Berra
LB: Lee Wallace

RM: Steven Whittaker
CM: Darren Fletcher
CM: ?
LM: ?

ST: Leigh Griffiths
ST: Jason Cummings

Would be good to fill in the gaps and find some alternative to Berra/Wallace.

Iceland's population is 331,778 based on current UN figures. Edinburgh's is currently estimated at 489,000 (7th largest in UK).

That's a thing about very small nations - their international players obviously get experience playing against international players on a regular basis - so no matter where they start from that's going to make you a better player and work your socks off to get even better. So professional clubs from bigger countries recognise that and give them a chance.

That doesn't take a bit away from the amazing performance that this Iceland team have been putting in though - they played like a proper team and deservedly put England to the sword. Interesting question about what Edinburgh BORN team we could put out to face them but they would need a top management team in place as well to match up - Strachan would be a good start!

Nah it's nearly half the size of Edinburgh. Iceland has a population of only 320,000 and Edinburgh is 500,000.

I have to admit the "Edinburgh is a small city" bollax really grates me now. Belfast and Newcastle are half the size of our fair city yet you never hear them called small cities. :soapbox: :greengrin

Yip, have a read of this excellent article, the SFA/Scottish Government could learn from this model.

He scored two from about 40 yards!

He scored from about 25 yards into the top corner and a curler from the edge of the box.

Three of the best goals you'll ever see in one game.

I think there's only 5 players who were in the squad that night who are at the Euros. Victor Palsson didn't make it.

Iceland have 650 UEFA trained coaches for 330,000 people.

England have 1,395 UEFA coaches for 53 million people.

There’s your answer.

Brilliant! Just like Derek Riordans offside volley from 30 yards into the top corner that never happened either!

Two good goals but nothing like 40 yards, one of them was from inside the box :hilarious

They all started the match.

On the bench that night, in Iceland's 23 man squad Euro squad.

Victor Palsson came off the bench that night!

Ignore that, just seen someone put him in.
Can't we put the young lad Finnbogson in our team seen as he grew up here?

I watched that game, Iceland were on fire! Still can't get over that lassie with the broken nose smashing the ball into the back of the net with her face....

Mental!
