Completely depends on the circumstance at hand, different teams use different methods. Radio transmitters are often used, sometimes motion tracking or GPS is implemented too. Calvin Charlton is our performance analyst so if you're able to Tweet or email him, he might be better suited to answer specifics!

I thought the tracking we see in the bigger games was by a matrix of fixed cameras around the stadium, Xbox Kinect style?

I always wondered about possession. If the keeper launches it, is that still possession for his team til it comes down?

Does anyone else think it's all a bit pointless?

That's what I always used to think, in a two guys pressing stop and start on opposing stopwatches-type way.

Is it not just taken as percentages of how many completed passes each team makes?

Completed passes are a different statistic. I think possession is calculated in favour of the team who last touched the ball whilst it was still in play, so if the keeper hoofs it, or a teammate makes a cross-field pass, the ball's travelling time still counts towards possession for your side. (Ergo you're 'dispossessed' once the opposition touch the ball).

I would think that if the keeper has the ball, his team have possession until the other team get the ball so that includes when it's 50 feet in the air.

That's why Hearts have 70% possession figures even when the ball is in the air for 52% of that time :agree:
