Now that the powers that be have rejected the landslide winning name for the new research vessel, can I suggest we name the ship "Democracy" as it's the only way we'll ever get to see it these days.
(I'm referring to the name not the boat, BTW).

Surely nobody actually took it seriously. It was a schoolboy style prank gone viral. Funny for five seconds but common sense eventually prevails.

Agreed but it still exposes these polls for the stupid idea they are.

They could probably just have named the boat. Or provided a shortlist of 'acceptable' names to vote on. There is no point having an open vote and then ignoring the popular suggestion - stupid or not.

Call it what they will it will be boaty mcboatface to me. The voters have spoken :)

The idea was good if they had made it a closed poll with a list of names to vote on. Trusting the great British public not to hijack it was a bit mad :greengrin

We never quite got the bridge at Wembley Stadium named after Jim Baxter, did we?

It wasn't a public vote to name the ship, it was a public vote to suggest names to be put to a panel who would decide on the most suitable. It wasn't "democratic" in the modern sense, but it was never intended to be.

The Natural Environment Research Council who organised the vote has played a bit of a blinder in terms of publicity.
