Each line has a particular number of syllables that make the tune work. Some will take a little deviation from it but most of the song attempts I see posted here take no account by of it whatsoever and just don't work.

Indeed I am. There are certain patterns in writing songs and lyrics that work and ones that don't. Taking a tune of a song and then changing the pattern rarely works out well. It's not that tricky just to try and keep with the flow of a tune.
