My wee boys partner is a 3rd year photography student at Edinburgh University and has been offered a 3 month stint in New York.

Dafty has decided to go too!

Anyone got any thoughts on the best way of getting an apartment for 3 months?

Best areas verses cheapest prices.

Also Dafty is going to the Consulate to see about a 3 month working visa. He's a pretty good barman. Assuming a successful visa application thoughts on how he can line up a job in advance.

Thanks.

Does your lad have a flat here? If so, maybe those sites where people swap houses could do the trick?

Good shout. I'd kinda thought about that but more as an independent rental. I suppose it is possible someone over there is doing the opposite or as near as. Cheers.

Try AirBnB or Oodle.

It won't be pretty viewing, though. NYC ain't cheap and the pound just took a big hit.

I know it has changed since I was there but I am sure it would be a student visa and so unlikely to allow the person to work.

My working visa was linked to my work, if I left it I would have had to reapply iirc. It is a funny system.

One piece of advice though: when they come to London for the visa interview, stay over night and book the earliest appointment!! And dint take ANYTHING except what they ask for, they will send you away down the road and waste your time.

Wish the boy well but I was always under the impression that it was very hard to get a working visa for America and that you have to already have a job lined up.

:agree: it is. Will be a student visa only. Sure he could find a local bar to tend who will turn a blond eye but get caught and it is goodbye rather quickly.

The US offers a 4-month student working visa over the summer called a J-1. It is popular with Irish students. You need to have a job offer lined up before applying but there is websites available who help match employers and potential employees.

Just to make clear.

My son is going with his student girlfriend, he's not a student.

Ah, then the J1 is the best bet.

You need to watch short term rentals in New York. Many instances are actually illegal, certainly anything less than 30 days (eg if they plan on doing an AirBnB prior to finding something longer) is likely to be illegal.

Airbnb is pretty good, depending where they want to go you can get a decent appt for about £1200 per month, which may seem a lot for here but thats really cheap for NY

Is the J-1 not for students

Think it is now for students and seasonal workers now. I had a H2 which is for seasonal work, dont think that exists anymore. I will be finding out soon enough!

Might be worth looking at house sitting sites like mindmyhouse.com There are a few of them, usually just pay running costs for the house, and often pet sitting. Good way to find cheap accomodation for a longer period.

Looking at heading back to NYC in October for at least 5 days. Any pointers towards the cheapest and best way to do this from either Glasgow/Edinburgh would be great, thanks.

Norwegian Airlines apparently are cheap and great service.

Find that the cheapest way to do it is actually to fly via Iceland but thats not what I'm looking for. Trying to get a direct flight from Scotland and tried looking at AA and Continental but for some reason cant seem to find any flights although I'm pretty sure they both fly direct .

What I'm actually looking to do if possible (I know it is but cant seem to find the right flights) is fly into New York and then fly out of Philly.

We're going for 5 days in April, flying with American Airlines from Edinburgh, flights were cheaper than what I've paid for Lanzarote in the summer!

:agree: There are tons of flights every week to NYC so you can get some decent deals. I got flights for less than £400 return over the Super Bowl (which was in NYC) weekend.

I must be doing something wrong. Tried looking online again and its costing thousands just for 2 flights .

Nope, straight there from Edinburgh. We booked last September, not sure if that makes any difference.

Finally figured out where I went wrong although its just crazy. Had been looking for single tickets so was shocked at the price they were coming in at. Decided to price it for return flights to see what came up. Here's an example flying with AA to New York. 2 people flying one way on the 6th of October = £2500. 2 people return flights flying out on the 6th of October and returning on the 13th = £1132. Thats £1400 CHEAPER to fly return, mental :confused::confused:.

Try Budget Air, they are affiliated to Skyscanner. I booked through them a month ago.

Return flights from Edinburgh to New York, onto Charlotte, then Chattanooga. Flying with American Airlines, just under £700 for two, flying in June.
