On another thread reference is made somewhat jokingly to the introduction of substitutes, but didn't want to derail the thread on Harry Swan, so will post this piece of meaningless trivia on its own thread:greengrin

Our first substitute to make an appearance was Pat Quinn who came on for Joe Davis in 1966, but what some of our younger posters may be unaware of, was that when first introduced substitutions could only be made to replace an injured player.

No tactical substitutions were allowed.

Of course this soon changed when managers would shout to a certain player, who would then immediately fall to the ground 'injured', allowing the substitution to be made.

It didn't take the powers to be that their .'rule' was unenforceable.
