Barbara Windsor a Dame or a just a dame? IMO neither.
Just shows you what a load of bollox this Sir & Dame honours crap is.
This takes dumbing down to an all time low.

I think it's ultimately a good thing when people like Barbara Windsor get honours from the Queen as it shows up the current system for the complete joke that it is. Out of touch politicians and civil servants rewarding their mates and having a guess at what will appease the monarchists in the general public.
I also prefer looking at the list of those who've turned down honours.

Is there a list available to view of those who have rejected an honour?

I'm a bit torn on the honours system.
On the one hand it's outdated, abused by politicians and the language is a total throwback.
On the other hand I like the idea of some kind of system that recognises people who contributed to society, particularly those who have tried to make the world a better place in their own way. I know someone who received an MBE in the last honours list for her services working with disadvantaged children and it was a proud moment for her having years of pretty thankless work recognised.

There are better ways to honour deserving people.

Complete farce. Several "colleagues" received birthday honours for doing their job. Noticably the top members of a team that were well thanked at the end of the project with several promotions. The other bugbear is rewarding entrepreneurs for risking other peoples money and sportspeople for being good at sport with knighthoods.

:agree: I've just seen that Ian Mirfin and Janice Eaglesham, both of whom I know fairly well, have both been awarded MBEs for their services to disability sport.
You would struggle to come across two more deserving recipients of such an award. They work tirelessly in their role as athletics coaches and a lot of the work they do is voluntary.
I'm absolutely delighted for the pair of them.

This is the good side of the system. However, an Irish citizen who made millions in reaching the top of his sport is given a knighthood. That's the hypocrisy.
I note that 50% of the honours were awarded to women.
As women are held back by the patriarchy, that must mean its easier for a woman to get an honour with a lesser level of achievement than a man.

I take it Andy Murray's telegram got lost in the post?

Richie McCaw of the All Blacks turned down a knighthood.

I'd wager a large sum that Murray will be knighted at the first opportunity after he retires from tennis.

I would guess that he would not want to be announced on court as Sir Andy Murray. Would seem a bit silly.
After he retires and takes up a different role it might suit him better.

Not sure he was offered one recently, but in 2011 they spoke about it and he said no while he's still playing, so felt it wasn't the right time.....his day will come.
Now he's won 2 world cups, and bucketful of major achievements in a hugely challenging environment.....I think for services to rugby and being a fantastic ambassador for his sport merits a knighthood one day...if they approach him again.
Did he not get an order of NZ or something along with Dan Carter ?......maybe that's a compromise.

He said he just didn't feel right in accepting a knighthood. He was awarded NZs highest honour instead. The order of New Zealand

I would say that's the biggest reason.
Winning US Open, Wimbledon, Olympic Gold and helping GB win the Davis Cup would usually merit a knighthood.

Can't stand the honours system. Archaic and patronising in equal measure. A heady, sh*tty combo of patronage and deference to those 'born to rule over us'. Meanwhile, the peasants bicker over who deserves it most or least.
Some kind of system of national merit is a great thing. I know a variety of people who have some kind of recognition or other from Legion D'Honeur, through MBEs etc but Dames, Knights of the Realm and all that nonsense? It's like something from an absurd fairy tale.

For her tireless work raising awareness of mental health issues and fundraising efforts for various mental health charities?

I'm sure she's lived here most of her life so is presumably a British citizen by now.
