"Thou shall not have fun" Edinburgh Council's perennial motto.

Seems a bit harsh but I suppose if there was an accident they'd get pelters.

Never been myself but obviously the numbers have been swelling over the years with potential for problems now identified so it seems a sensible decision to me.

Is it not because they are letting Obervatory House out for the week ?

Ah boo. That's my plans scuppered.

What's a good alternative?

Last year, I was at the other side of town and just stood outside the Rutland (after a couple of lovely cocktails inside) which was nice.

You should try it. I've walked up there and you won't believe how friendly people are. It wasn't new year though.

Yes I hear there's plenty of swelling up there most nights.

They should just charge folk to go up there.

They've done it with the 'traditional' Princes St party (where no one from Edinburgh ever went for Hogmanay), they are doing it with the High Street (where people from Edinburgh did go for Hogmanay) so why not Calton Hill? The tourists can enjoy it whilst folk from the city enjoy a night at home or in their local pub or whatever.

Just in time for the council to charge them for going to their favourite pub next year ;)

I am hearing that street party tickets are at an all time low (no wonder at £25) and thats why Colinton Hill is closed, to try force more sales for the street party.

I think people might be worried about safety as well.

I can't see safety suddenly being a problem there at hogmanay. They are happy enough to allow plenty people to pile onto Calton Hill at the end of the torchlight procession.

It was in reference to the actual steet party I know some people who didn't go as it may have been a risk of a terrorist target.
