Season 2001-02

28th July, the first match in front of the new West Stand was a 2-2 draw against Kilmarnock.

22nd August, Bobby Johnstone died aged 71. During his two spells with Hibs he played 199 competitive games and scored 105 goals.

13th September, the away tie in the first round of the UEFA cup against AEK Athens was postponed due to disruption of flights as a result of the September 11th terrorist attacks. Despite this many fans had already arrived in Athens.

20th September, the rearranged game against AEK took place and Hibs lost 2-0.

27th September, the home tie against AEK Athens saw another classic European night at Easter Road. Paco Luna’s goals in the 52nd and 82nd minutes set up a dramatic final few minutes, however Luna’s miss in the last minute denied Hibs the winner and resulted in extra time. Two goals by AEK and one by Zitelli saw the Greeks progress 4-3 on aggregate.

11th December, Alex McLeish resigned as manager to join Rangers.

12th December, coach Donald Park took Hibs to Ibrox to face McLeish’s Rangers. The game ended 1-1.

14th December, Franck Sauzée was given the chance to enter management and was appointed as the new boss.

22nd February, after only 15 games and 69 days in charge, Sauzée was sacked. Although he managed draws against Celtic at home and Hearts at Tynecastle, his only win, a 4-0 victory against Stranraer in the Scottish Cup, was not enough.

25th February, Kilmarnock manager Bobby Williamson was appointed Hibs new manager.

May, Williamson managed 5 wins and a draw form the last nine games of the season and ensured Hibs SPL status.
