Season 1996-97



9th September, Gordon Hunter was awarded a testimonial; Hibs played Coventry City and won 3-2.

September, Roderick McKenzie Petrie was appointed onto the Hibs board.

13th September, After leaving his player-manager role at QPR following their relegation, 40 year old English defender Ray Wilkins was signed to shore up the Hibs defence for an initial four games period, he eventually played 17 times for Hibs and departed in January after a 2-1 loss to his former employers Rangers.

30th September, Alex Miller was sacked following a 3-1 defeat to Hearts at Easter Road. Miller managed 467 competitive games; he won 162, lost 161 and drew 144.

12th October, Assistant manager Jocky Scott took over on a care-taker basis. His first game in charge was a 2-1 win over Rangers.

December, Hibs went on-line with the launch of the club’s official internet site, www.hibs.co.uk.

1st January, Hibs new manager Jim Duffy arrived at Easter Road, from Dundee, via Tom Farmer’s Kwik-Fit Flyer helicopter but his first game in charge was not so high flying. Hibs went down 4-0 to Hearts; John Robertson opened the scoring with his 25th goal against Hibs. Duffy’s last act a Dundee manager was to sell Jim Hamilton to Hearts. Hamilton scored twice against Hibs on that day.

Rod Petrie was appointed Managing Director of the football club.

May, Hibs ended the season in ninth position and had to take-part in a play-off against Airdrie. A 1-0 home win and 4-2 away win saved Hibs Scottish Premier Division status.
