Season 1989-90

The new club crest was introduced for the start of the season. The new design was affectionately known as the ‘Planet Saturn’ badge.

October, after beating Videoton 4-0 in the first round of the UEFA cup, Hibs lost out 0-1 on aggregate to FC Liege.

28th December, Douglas Cromb joined the Hibs board.

Edinburgh Hibernian plc, the holding company for the club, had been diversifying in to other activities out with football, including property and leisure centres. These did not perform as expected and resulted in financial pressure of the holding company.

June, Hibs debt at the end of 1988 stood at £882k but had then grown to around £4.5m, £1.5m more than previously estimated.

Heart of Midlothian FC owner Wallace Mercer had the idea of ‘merging’ Hibs and Hearts and he started buying up Hibs shares. News of his activities leaked out and Hibs fans soon formed a campaign to oppose this take-over.

‘Hands Off Hibs’ arranged a number of events to save their club. Kenny McLean and the Hibs Supporters Association headed up the fight.

On the field Hibs kept fighting on but results were not outstanding, they ended the season in 7th position, on the same points as Motherwell and Celtic and only one behind Dundee United in 4th.
