Verdict changed to murder on appeal and he'll soon be back in court to hear a new sentence passed.

Have to say I'm surprised.

And rightly so, the whole trial and subsequent sentencing was a farce.

And it looks very likely that there is no grounds for appeal....good to see justice done. Her family should never have had to go through what they did after such a tragic event but they may at least have some closure today.

As was I - not because I think he's innocent, I just couldn't see them overturning it.

Obviously no double jeopardy in SA.

The case always stunk.

As I understand it, he wasn't re-tried. The new conviction is the result of a prosecution appeal of the original charge and subsequent sentencing.

I read an article many months ago which explained that the legal system used in South Africa hasn't been reformed since the days of apartheid. The courts still use antiquated procedures which were originally put in place to preserve white supremacy in the country. Ironic I suppose in this case.

Regardless of Pistorius' guilt or otherwise, it's an unusual way for justice to be applied.

at last, absolutely delighted this murderer is finally going to get an appropriate sentence, he will just need to wait a few years longer to reap the mountain of money he will receive for any forthcoming book describing his hell in jail  although he will have a wee cushy cell adapted for him and most likely not have to face 'real' criminals/murderers in the main part of a prison

Have to agree with the legal reasoning.

six years for the murderer

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-36719561

In an hour-long session, Judge Thokozile Masipa said mitigating circumstances, such as rehabilitation and remorse, outweighed aggravating factors for deviating from the prescribed 15-year sentence for murder.

note to future murderers, when yo're in court just tell the judge you feel quit sad that you took someones life

Judge Thokozile Masipa: "I am of the view that a long term of imprisonment will not serve justice in this matter"

You could put him away for 50 years and it wouldn't be justice, that's not the point though, well not in my opinion anyway. You're never going to get justice, but he should be punished for what he did.

6 years is a disgrace. He murdered someone. Murdered. It wasn't an accident.

I assume the prosecution will be appealing...they managed to change the first verdict but ultimately it's only added a year to the sentence. Shocking.

it's taken over a year but finally a little more appropriate sentence

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-42107701

A South African court has increased Olympic athlete Oscar Pistorius's jail sentence for killing his girlfriend to 13 years and five months.Prosecutors had argued that the six-year term for murdering Reeva Steenkamp was "shockingly light".

still, it will give him longer to think of what to put in the book that will no doubt make him a few million:rolleyes:

That's still pretty light, albeit better than the initial 6 years.
