It would mean more if we were in the top league and had a record like that. I do remember seeing a football programme back in 1973 that showed we were ranked 5th in Europe. Anyway back to my pipe and slippers in my care home.

We didn't need to win six games in a row to know that.

Thats quite amazing that there's only 5 teams in the whole of European football that have won their last 6 matches.

Correct .... I saw an old bit of footage not too long ago of Hibs kicking off a league game at ER in the early 70s and Archie MacPherson says right at kick off that Hibs are the 5th ranked team in Europe.

Aye mate .... the difference is that for us its a wee amusing snippet of information that we know doesn't mean anything. To them it was confirmation that they actually were one of Europe's top clubs, just like Vlad said they would be :faf:

I thought it was about Hertz winning their 5th European trophy, they haven't half pushed on since their first CL win

There was an article in the Pink News the week after we beat Hearts 0-7 that showed Hibs as third placed team in Europe for the whole of 1972, behind Ajax and Bayern Munich.

It is scary how far we as a club have fallen in the last 40 years. To think that I thought it was the "norm" for us to be that good back then. I was soon to get a quick and brutal wake up call.

Anyway who cares where we are ranked in Europe, Hibs will always be #1 in my eyes :flag:

I don't think its that Hibs have fallen so much as a challenge which used to be Arthurs Seat has become Ben Nevis.

Back in the day teams like Hibs could compete because money was only a part of football, now its the be all and end all. I'm not saying that there couldn't come a time where teams like us or Dundee Utd couldn't come up with a team that could make the group stages of the Europa League, we have to still hope that's possible. But there is never going to come a time again where we are anything but an inconvenience for clubs like Liverpool or Napoli to swat aside. Look at the once mighty Ajax, who are little more than an also ran these days.

The other thing to consider is that to challenge in Europe you have to be able to keep a decent side together for more than two seasons. What chance is there of doing that when bigger, or should I say richer, clubs are knocking on the door the second one of your players proves he can kick a ball straight. Swansea for Cummings and Sporting Lisbon for Ryan Gauld springs to mind.

:aok:

It's partly that Scottish football has fallen and partly that we have but in the main everyone else has careered ahead whilst we try and tread water.
