I attended the lobby and debate on the anti trade union bill at the Scottish Parliament today. I was delighted to hear the SNP, Labour, Lib Dems and Greens all saying they opposed the bill and will be looking to get a motion of legislative consent. Which would block the bill in Scotland. The Scottish Parliament are also calling for the whole bill to be scrapped.

I'm glad they're working together on this (and that you're happy :greengrin). The brass neck of the Tories putting this forward when they got support from just 26% of the electorate is breathtaking.

That's a better proportion of the vote than Unison had on the strikes they pulled us out on

Only the 14 Tories vote in favour of the bill despite the fact only 2 of them turned up to hear the debate. Good speeches from Roseanne Cunningham and Ian Gray.

You and your colleagues had the right to vote yes or no, but clearly a large number chose to abstain as is there democratic right. With this bill anyone who abstains, their vote would automatically end up a no vote. That's not democratic and is wrong

Remember this?
It's when Labour allowed people who didn't vote, or were DEAD to be allocated to the NO VOTE. A policy never used in any UK election before or since.
Let's hope they've learned the lessons of the past, and don't vote against Scotland again eh.:aok:

If an individual doesn't vote they are agreeing to abide by the result returned by those who do. Its a bit ( well exactly ) like folk who don't vote in general elections and then moan about the government they end up with.
As for the union bill. If the voting conditions the are trying to impose on the unions were applied to MPs elections half of them wouldn't be there. The fact that they wont allow the unions to bring in electronic voting couldn't make it any clearer what the purpose of this bill is.
They also want to force the unions to give members an 'opt in/out' option when it comes to union donations to the Labour party. In principle I'm not against that, many union members are not Labour supporters.
But lets face it, that has nothing to do with any moral principle and everything to do with the Tories wanting to cut Labour's financial balls off. In the context of what this will mean for the balance of UK politics it also has to be proposed in conjunction with new rules and regulations regarding donations to political parties by big business, which massively benefits the Tories. For example, forcing companies with shareholders to obtain a vote from these shareholders authorising donations to political parties, before a single penny is ever handed over.
It would also be interesting to see what would happen if a law was enacted to preclude any individual giving a donation of £100,000 or more to a political party from ever being the recipient of a peerage. That'll show us who has a political conscience and who is in it for their own advancement.
That aside, this is nothing more than yet another attack on workers rights that would make Thatcher proud ..... it should be fought tooth and nail every inch of the way !!!

I seem to have touched a nerve here. No need to be so vehement in your choice of language.:na na:
I've not said anything about the SNP or the Yes campaign. You seem to be unable to post without mentioning them.:greengrin
My point was that Labour had re-written the 40% rule with the dead being included, that's all. I know you probably don't like it, but it happened.
