Hibs were invited to play in the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, a competition for teams representing city that held ‘trade fairs’, the Edinburgh International Festival was deemed to be a trade fair.

October, Hibs were drawn against Swiss side Lausanne-Sport but they withdraw before the first leg tie and Hibs were awarded a 2-0 victory.

December, Hibs were then drawn against Barcelona in the quarter-final with the first leg due to be played at Easter Road on the 14th December, however fog resulted in the game being postponed. When the game was eventually played, two days after Christmas it was in the Camp Nou, Joe Baker stunned the home fans in the 60,000 crowd by opening the scoring after only 7 minutes; Johnny MacLeod made it two eleven minutes later. Hungarian Sándor Kocsis levelled the score with goals in the 38th and 53rd minutes. Tam Preston edged Hibs ahead in the 72th and Joe doubled the advantage two minutes later. Kocsis scored his hat-trick with seven minutes remaining. Brazilian Evaristo then levelled the game at 4-4 in the 89th.

11th February, Hibs recorded a 15-1 third round victory over Peebles Rovers in the Scottish Cup. Joe Baker scored nine with Ormond and Baxter each grabbing two each, McLeod and Baird scored the others.
22nd February, Barça returned to Edinburgh, Baker opened the scoring after ten minutes, Eulogio Martínez levelled just before the half-hour mark, Kocsis then gave them the lead just before half time. Preston equalised in the74th minute. On 85 minutes, German referee Johannes Malka then awarded Hibs, what some would describe as a ‘dubious penalty’. The Spanish players complained bitterly and pushed and jostled Herr Malka, police entered the pitch to clam them down, and after a few minutes Bobby Kinloch eventually took the penalty and scored the winner. Hibs won 3-2 on the night, 7-6 on aggregate and had eliminated the holders and the then only team ever to have won the ‘Fairs Cup’.

19th April, Hibs played Roma in the first leg of the semi-final at Easter Road. Francisco Lojacono opened the scoring on 14 minutes, Baker equalised just after half-time, Lojacono restored their advantage in the 63rd but MacLeod again levelled the game in the 82nd.

26th April, the second leg was played in the Stadio Olimpico in Rome. Argentinean Pedro Manfredini opened the scoring after 23 minutes; Kinloch levelled on the 31st and then gave Hibs the lead in the 64th, Manfresini hit one back three minutes later. Lojacono gave them the lead again on 72 but Baker was on hand to make it 3-3, 5-5 on aggregate, and force a replay with nine minutes remaining.

27 May, The replay, again in Rome, was a month after Hibs’ last league match in which Third Lanark had beat them 6-1. Hibs were not, if truth be told, up for this additional match and went down 6-0 with Manfredini scoring four of their goals. (In October Roma went on to win the cup after beating Birmingham City 4-2 on aggregate.)

June, Joe Baker moved to Torino for £75,000, after the Hibs board refused to give him a £5 wage increase from his existing wage of £12 a week. Baker had scored 102 goals in 117 appearances.

Johnny McLeod was sold to Arsenal.
