Season 1957-58

After being on trial with Chelsea for a month, Schoolboy Scottish Internationalist Joe Baker signed for Hibs.

14th August, Joe Baker made his debut for Hibs against Airdrie in the Scottish League Cup, Hibs lost 4-1.

14th October, Hibs played a friendly against Tottenham Hotspur at Easter Road; Hibs won 5-2 with Baker scoring a hat-trick.

February, Hibs started their Scottish Cup run with a 0-0 draw away to Dundee Utd, they won the replay 2-0 , with Baker and Frye scoring. Hibs were then drawn against an ‘invincible’ Hearts at Tynecastle, Hibs won 4-3 with Baker scoring all four. Hibs beat Third Lanark 3-2 in the quarter-final.

April, Hibs played Rangers in the semi-final at Hampden; the game was drawn 2-2, with Aitken and Preston scoring. The replay four days later saw Hibs progress to the final after winning 2-1, Turnbull scored a penalty and John Fraser scored the winner. The two games were watched by more than a total of 151,000.

26th April, Hibs went into the 1958 Scottish Cup Final against Clyde as favourites. Joe Baker had been scoring Hibs goals but Andy Aitken was the man behind all the good plays and hard work in the team, Clyde knew this and it was not long into the game that Andy was contemptuously taken out by Clyde’s Mick Clinton. There were no substitutes back then so Andy played on but was just a passenger. Clyde scored from an effort by Joe Coyle, the shot was going wide but a deflection off John Baxter’s toe diverted the ball past Lawrie Leslie in the Hibs goal. Baker did have the ball in the back of the net but referee Jack Mowat rule that he had used a hand. Clyde won the cup 1-0.
