15th September, Gordon Smith is awarded a testimonial and Hibs played Manchester United, Hibs won 7-3 with goals coming from; Turnbull 3, Reilly 2, Smith, Ormond.

13th December, Hibs score their 3,000th league goal against Partick Thistle in a 5-4 defeat at Firhill in a Division ‘A’ game.

29th April, Hibs beat Raith Rovers 4-1 but this was not enough to allow them to win the league. Hibs and Rangers both ended the season with 43 points. Rangers were crowned champions on goal difference, had it been goal average Hibs would have retained the league title. Rangers had scored 80 goals and conceded 39, whereas Hibs had scored 93 and conceded 51.

May, Hibs took part in the Coronation Cup along with Rangers, Celtic and Aberdeen representing Scotland, and Manchester United, Arsenal, Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur from England.
Hibs drew with Spurs 1-1 before beating them 2-1. Turnbull, Johnstone with one each and Reilly with two allowed Hibs to beat Newcastle United 4-0 and progress to the final against Celtic who had won against Arsenal and Manchester United.

20th May, the final was watched by 117,060 but saw Celtic win 2-0. (Celtic had only been invited to join because they could guarantee large crowds).

June, Hibs were invited to take part in a post-season tournament in Brazil. The tournament was labelled by the Brazilian FA as a World Club Championship; it was titled the ‘Torneio Octogonal Rivadavia Corrêa Meyer’. Hibs played three games; they drew the first one against Vasco da Gama 3-3, but lost 3-1 and 3-0 against Botafogo FC Riberiao Preto and Fluminense. The tournament was to involve four Brazilian and four ‘foreign’ clubs. The other foreign clubs were Paraguayan side Olimpia, Sporting CP, the Portuguese Champions. Spain’s Real Madrid (the Champion of the Small Cup of the World) and Uruguay’s Nacional, however the Uruguayan Champions withdrew from the competition. Vasco da Gama won the tournament after beating São Paulo 2-1 in the final.
