Season 1947-48

Following gates of fifty and sixty thousand in games against Rangers, Chairman Harry Swan drew-up plans to increase Easter Road’s capacity to just under 100,000

24th January, Hibs played Albion Rovers at Cliftonhill, Hibs won the game 3-0. The celebrations were short-lived however, as it was on this day that Hibs manager Willie McCartney collapsed at the ground and later died.

31st January, Hibs trainer Hugh Shaw took over the role of manager and Jimmy McColl was appointed trainer.

27th March, Hibs played Rangers in the semi-final of the Scottish Cup at Hampden, 143,570 supporters watched Rangers’ Willie Thornton score the only goal of the game.

28th April, five Hibs players turned out for Scotland in their 2-0 win over Belgium at Hampden - Govan, Smith, Combe, Shaw and Turnbull.

1st May, Hibs played their last league game of the season against Dundee at Dens Park, Hibs lost 3-1 but that was not enough to stop Hibs winning the league. Rangers, their only real contenders, had a game in hand and if they had won it they would have matched Hibs’ 48 points. On the 3rd of May Hearts beat Rangers at Ibrox 2-1.
