It's a great gesture, but I wonder if he's sought legal advice on this. Formally permitting (rather than unknowlingly acquiescing) people to reside in a building he owns could potentially have unintended consequences with regards to their rights and his responsibilities.

That said, he's got buy in from the squatters meaning they are more likely to leave voluntarily when he comes to redevelop the hotel. Thus avoiding a protracted legal battle to get squatters out.

I think you've taken the quotes too seriously. Just pointing out that there are other considerations. Would hate to see him burnt in what is a brilliant gesture and act of kindness.
