Season 1940-41

10th August, a new league structure was set-up and Hibs played their first game in the Scottish Southern League against Queens Park, winning 3-2. The new league was made up of teams in the Forth/Clyde valley.

Monday 28th April, McCartney gives three youngsters their chance in the first team, Gordon Smith, Bobby Combe and Jock Weir, in the last game of the season Hibs beat Hearts 5-2 with Combe scoring one and Smith hitting a hat-trick. Sixteen year old Smith and seventeen year old Combe had only signed for Hibs earlier that day after both players had been expected to sign for Hearts.

May, Hibs ended the league in third place behind first placed Rangers and second placed Clyde.

7th June, Hibs played in a new competition, the Summer Cup. The idea was the brainchild of Hibs Chairman Harry Swan, Hibs won their first game at Celtic Park 5-2, (Arthur Milne scored a hat-trick) but Hibs lost the home tie 1-0. They met Clyde in the second round and it took three games before Hibs progressed to meet Dumbarton in the semi-final where they won 1-0 at Tynecastle. Hibs played Rangers in the final at Hampden where they won 3-2. Hibs were two nil down before Willie Finnegan scored a penalty just before half-time, he added a second on 61 minutes, Robert Baxter scored the winner with only two minutes remaining in the game.

My great grandfather died of a heart attack in the stadium during the summer '41 0-1 defeat to Celtic, mentioned above.

Does anyone know who the club doctor was at that time as I suspect it may be him who certified the death.
