View Full Version : Hibs v Dundee Utd, League Cup QF - Wed 4th November, 7.45pm

Well the short wait, which has turned out to be quite a long one, is nearly over for the quarter final draw.

Here's hoping we get drawn against the remaining teams in order of preference:-

1. Morton [weakest team left in the draw - gives us the best chance of progressing]
2. Dundee Utd [ripe for the taking with off the field turmoil and no manager]
3. Hearts [bragging rights up for grabs and a good money earner - hope to meet them at Hampden ideally]
4. Ross Co [good result against them in the Cup last season]
5. Inverness [on a semi decent run in the league at the moment but very beatable]
6. St Johnstone [wary of their tactically astute manager and on a decent run in the league/cup]
7. Celtic [we've little chance of progressing unless they play a 2nd XI and we are at home. I would hate to see Leigh play against us]

Your thoughts?

They'd come to ER and play with 10 men behind the ball. We'd struggle to break them down as per and it could all go tits up.

I can guarantee we will be playing Hearts at Tynecastle.

For an uncertain event like a live draw, it definitely has an inevitability about it. I think it's a stick-on to be a derby.

Danderhall Hibs

If normally always want the lowest ranked team at home but we struggle against teams that come and sit in so we'd probably have a better chance against a team that think they are better than us and come to win the match.

I can guarantee we will be playing Hearts at Tynecastle.

We must be due to play them at Tynecastle in a cup tie.

IIRC the last time was around 1972 when Arthur Duncan scored a solo effort from the halfway line.

Since then we must have drawn them 4 or 5 times at ER.

Too much being made of the 'getting up for it against bigger teams' and 'not breaking teams down when they sit in' in my opinion.

Morton at home is still without a doubt the most favourable draw for us and every other team.

Wonder how they can fix a draw? Tell everyone its live when its been recorded earlier behind the scenes?
Heated balls? Cold balls?
I remember watching a few draws years ago where the balls were sat in a pot and no one mixed them. They just kept pulling ties out without moving the balls at all.

I'm not sure they would be. I know we struggle to break down teams that sit in, but in most cases we eventually do and win unconvincingly. Most teams would rather go out having a bit of a go at it.

To come out in that specific order (1v2, then 2v3, then 3v4, etc.), it'd be 40320/1, wouldn't it?

To come out in that specific order (1v2, then 2v3, then 3v4, etc.), it'd be 40320/1, wouldn't it?

7 x 6 x 5 x 4 x 3 x 2 = 5040/1

easty
28-09-2015, 12:48 PM
7 x 6 x 5 x 4 x 3 x 2 = 5040/1

But to come out in that order....it'd need to be the number 1 ball first. Which is one of 8, so 8 x 7 x 6 x 5 x 4 x 3 x 2. No?

Sergey

To come out in that specific order (1v2, then 2v3, then 3v4, etc.), it'd be 40320/1, wouldn't it?

No, it's only a 7/1 chance that ball 1 would get drawn first. So 7x6x5x4x3x2

In probability terms, 7/1 = one in eight.

When Hibs, in Division One, beat a high-flying Aberdeen in the League Cup, they drew St Johnstone in the next round away and lost 4-1.

It's a nightmare scenario. Not a lot of cash to be generated and no great kudos from winning either.

I'm happy enough with this draw.

The ideal time to get them would have been last week, they'll have a new manager in place and will probably have had a lift from that by then.

But we showed in the last round that we shouldn't fear anyone at home, especially a team from a higher league who will in all likeliness want to make a game of it.

Neither Celtic or Dun Utd could play on the Tuesday (they play each other on the Sunday) so would imagine Hearts v Celtic will be on the Wednesday and we will move to the Thursday.

We play Rangers on the following Sunday anyway and Celtic are due to play Aberdeen at Saturday lunchtime for TV so would think this is the most likely outcome.

Wonder if they'll move our game or the hearts v Celtic to the next week
Celtic play Molde in the Europa in the following week so they cannot be moved.

They could move it to the week after the rangers game. No hurry for this to be played, as the semis aren't until end January

Even although I would have been out of pocket if we had not had so many home ties, I think us Cup Toppers should pay the full whack for this game. It's only fair after all. :greengrin

Regardless of the quality that the Arabs will be on the night this game could give us a good indication of our chances in the play offs. Another performance and win like against Aberdeen and surely it gives the belief we can take on any team that finds itself 2nd bottom of SPL?
Of course we beat Ross County last season but they were in poor form and we never followed it up despite the good performance against Dundee United.
Given the likliehood of the playoffs then it is important we are a good cup team

Nae chance. Don't always get a CTU but did this season. Have been happy to pay for home cup games last 2 or 3 years. There's not been too many.

CTU this season has turned out to be payback IMO for the "inflated" season ticket prices in past 2 years. And I'm not afraid to say that. Cue dog's abuse for me not financially supporting the club lol

Would be amazed if United were happy to play 48 hours after playing Celtic. Would be great if they did.

So it means Hibs and Hearts both at home on the Wed. Don't think police will allow that especially as both pretty big games.

Could mean a Thursday night game for us??

This has nothing to do with the game itself but I have to ask as my nose is bothering me.

What did JimBHibees say in that post that you have both picked up on? Am I being silly here because I don't see anything wrong with it!

All I was saying was, if you play on a Sunday, as United are, you would expect to play a midweek game on the Wednesday at the earliest, not the Tuesday

Yeah I would agree with that although I don't think JimBHibees suggested otherwise and it just appeared from the two posts I quoted earlier that they were attempting to point out an error within his post.

Apologies if that wasn't the case!

Its pathetic really. I remember many years ago Yams played Oldco at PBS, we played Sheep at ER & Scotland played France at Murrayfield all at the same time. Our crowd, 27,000 was lowest & total was about 120,000. Nowadays with all the technology available we can't handle about 30,000 in one day.

My Dad told me about that (he was at ER that day) and he said there were 60k at Murrayfield, 45k at Tynecastle and about 25k at ER.

Amazing numbers, and they roughly match your figures.

Upcoming lot of fixtures in the league cup.

Meant to have an exam at Easter Road on the 4th. Hope this doesn't necessitate a change of venue.

I was in it with 46000 for a Hearts v Celtic cup tie in the 60's.

Really can remember a New years derby in the 70s and there was 36k and it was an absolute accident waiting to happen.
