Season 1901-02

26th April, Hibs won the Scottish Cup 1-0 against Celtic, with an Andy McGeachan goal, scored in the 75th minute. The game was described as a dull game played more in the style of a friendly than a cup final. The Hibs goal came from a corner taken by Callaghan, the ball was sent into the goal area, Atherton jumped and let it pass, and McGeachan sent it between Watson and Loney into the net, McFarlane (in the Celtic goal) never seeing the ball until it had passed the goal line. The cup was presented by President of the SFA to Philip Farmer, President of Hibernian at a social function after the game in the Alexandra Hotel Glasgow. On returning to Edinburgh, the Hibs team left the train at Haymarket and boarded a four-in-hand which progressed along Princes Street with a band playing, ‘See the conquering hero’.

The Hibs team on the day was; Harry Rennie in goal, Archie Gray and Bobby Glen at right and left backs, Barney Breslin, Jimmy Harrower and Alex Robertson in the centre of defence, Johnny McCall on the right wing, Bobby Atherton on the left wing, Andy McGeachan and Paddy Callaghan as inside right and left, with John Divers playing centre forward.

Hibs had progressed to the final after being Clyde 2-0 at Easter Road, Port Glasgow Athletic 5-1 away, Queen’s Park 7-1 in Glasgow, Rangers 2-0 at Ibrox in the semi-final. There was a crowd of 35,000 at the semi-final but only 16,000 at the final.

The cup final was played at Celtic Park after the original venue, Ibrox, had been badly damaged when part of the stand clapsed during a Scotland v England international match played on the 5th April, 25 people died and 517 were injured. 68,000 had been in the stadium at the time.

26th May, Hibs draw 4-4 with Edinburgh Rugbyites in a benefit match for the Ibrox Disaster Fund.

31st May, Hibs ended the season as holders of the Scottish Cup, East of Scotland League, Glasgow Charity Cup, Roseberry Cup and MacRae Cup.

Consideration was given to moving the club north to Aberdeen but this notion was soon dismissed.

Season results –
Scottish Cup Winners – Celtic 1-0
League Div1 6/10 Pld18 W6 D4 L8 F36 A24 Pts16

A good cup winning season that one .Out of interest do any of the club historians know what the thinking at the time was regarding considering moving the Club to Aberdeen .?
