Season 1896-97

August, Welsh internationalist Bobby Atherton signed for Hibs from Hearts after a move to Celtic hit a snag. He would later captain the cup winning team. He was one of the first full-time players in British football.

13th February, Hibs only lost one home league match all season, 3-0 to Dundee and finished the league in second position, 2 points behind Hearts. The last game of the season, a 2-0 defeat to St Mirren, deprived them from winning the League.

The Edinburgh League was extended to become the East of Scotland League but Hibs again came second to Hearts for the third year running.

11th May, Hibs beat Hearts 3-0 in the final of the Rosebery Cup, with goals from Martin (2) and Murray, 5,000 attended the match at Logie Green.
