Season 1887-88

13th August, Hibs took on Preston North End in a game that was billed by both the FA and SFA as ‘Association Football Championship of the World decider’. Hibs won the game 2-1, with goals from McGhee and McLaren to become Football Champions of the World.

6th November, after a meeting in Glasgow, it was agreed to set-up Celtic Football Club with the original intention of using the same model and ethos that led to the creation of Hibernians 13 years earlier.

1888 - The Celtic Football Club were founded, Hibernians had offered to lend Celtic an number of players for their initial games. However the naivety of the Hibs committee was to prove costly in the long run. Two of the founders of Celtic, a builder from Donegal named John Glass and a tailor named Pat Welsh, saw Celtic as a money making venture and offered a number of Hibs players financial inducements to join the Glasgow club. Seven of Celtic’s original eleven players were signed from Hibs.

12th May. After beating Hearts 6-0 in the semi-final, Hibs won the Earl of Rosebery’s Challenge Cup against Mossend Swifts 1-0.

4th May. Hibs opened the season playing the newly formed Celtic. Hibs lost 3-2.

I've got one of those Rosebery Cup winners medals from 1887/88. My great grandfather played that day!
