Season 1886-87



12th February, Hibs played in the Final of the Scottish Cup. After beating Durhamtown Rangers Bathgate 6-1 in the first round, they drew with Mossend Swifts 1-1 only to beat them 3-0 seven days later. The third round saw Hibs beat Hearts 5-1 before taking on Queen of the South Wanderers in the 4th round where Hibs won 7-3. Hibs beat Third Lanark 2-1 in the Quarter Final before disposing of Vale of Leven 3-1 in the Semi-Final. Goals from Groves and Montgomery saw Hibs beat Dumbarton 2-1 to lift the Scottish Cup in front of a crowd of 15,000.

19th March, Hibs beat Hearts 3-0 in the Final of the Edinburgh FA Shield to win eight out of the last ten finals.

16th May, James McGhee scored five goals in 25 minutes in the final of the Rosebery Cup, Hibs won 7-1. McGhee holds the record for the most goals scored against Hearts (24), he was also Hibs captain for the first Cup winning team, he later managed Hearts before emigrating to America, his son played for the USA 1930 World Cup team.

The third round saw Hibs beat Hearts 5-1 .....

....killed them as a club.

It was after this game that Hearts were rumoured to be so incensed that they considering making it a rule that all Hearts players must be "followers of Lord Roseberry", i.e. be Orangemen.
