Was watching a bit of Porto v Victoria Guimaraes on telly the other day and it got me remembering that V Guimaraes was first team I saw at ER in European tie ( 2 v 0 for us in 1970 with a Kenny Davidson starring for us - don`t remember much except being in Dunbar End in daylight (August / early September ? ) and think second game was 0 v 0 ) . We`d thrashed Malmo 6 v 0 at ER in previous round ( think we then won 3 v 2 away at a time when Swedish football was weaker than Scottish ) then lost to Liverpool in 3rd round . Think it was Inter Cities Fairs Cup which meant we qualified as 3rd but Hearts didn`t as 4th ( only 1 club per city ) and probably 5th team did ( Dunfermline or Killie perhaps ) . A long time before that we played Porto and a team called Beleneses ( ? ) and in 2013 played Nottingham Forest in Vilareal de San Antonio . In 1972 we thrashed Sporting Lisbon 6 v 1 at ER ( still my favourite Hibs game , Jimmy O`Rourke hattrick etc ) ) after losing 2 v 1 in first leg ( with purple strip for first time ) . Are these the only games we`ve played against Portuguese teams ( or in Portugal as in Notts Forest friendly ) ? Maybe a friendly in Madeira some time ? Have we ever played Benfica ? Did any fans travel to Lisbon in 1972 ? ( I think some did to Turin for Juventus game 3 or 4 years later ) .

Remember being at ER for the Belennenses game.

Without checking I reckon it would have been about 67

Different era...back then we didn't worry about getting into Europe...it just happened ever year.

Mind you while Eoropen Cup and Cup Winners Cup were on merit, I think the teams playing in the Fairs Cities Cup were nominated at least up to this point

Mind you, I think 90% of Portugal support Benfica!I read a few years ago that Benfica is the club with most supporters in the world based on them having most registered supporters . Thousands / millions all over the world say they support Man U , Barcelona etc but not many are actually registered as supporters but with Benfica yes apparently . Benfica and Sporting both have great grounds and supports but the last time I was in Lisbon ( a couple of years ago ) I was disappointed to see that loads of locals seemed really interested in Real Madrid ( cause of Ronaldo ) and Spanish league in general something that wasn`t the case say 15 - 20 years ago . Anyway , we thrashed Sporting , did we beat Oporto and have we ever played Benfica even in a friendly ?

Totally off thread ish(Stad le luz?). I was at England v France at Euro 2004(allez le blues) coming out while the beaten team fans were crying, I seen a gut with a Hibs tshirt on. Went to speak to him he was an aussie on tour but said it was his old mans top and team . Had no idea that wasnt the wisest move to wear Hibs top to an England game.

Sure my Grandad played against Beleneses, 1961 I think.

Hibs were 3-0 down at half time in the 1st leg and came back to draw 3-3, won 3-1 in Portugal.

Think hibs scored first (Alan gordon) then they equalised. 1-1 at HT.

Benfica have a massive fan base in Brazil. Think at one stage they had more fans registered there than they did in Portugal.

We played FC Porto in the first round of the Fairs Cup in 1967-68 and beat them 3-0 at ER, with Peter Cormack scoring 2 in the first half and Eric Stevenson the other just after HT.

We then lost 1-3 in Oporto with a real homer of a referee, though he was honest enough in the end to give us a penalty which Joe Davis (who else?) tucked away to see us through.

Peter Cormack and Porto's Rolando were sent off in the first half.

I think the home leg may just have been Alex Scott's first game for us.

(That's Alex Scott who was Jim Scott's brother and a man who could take a totally awesome corner kick which he did against Porto and then in the next round twice against Napoli. NOT Ally Scott, the totally useless lump of dog-meat who came to us from Hunville in the early 70's along with the equally useless Graham Fyfe.)

Just realised it's Jim Scott's 75th birthday today. Happy birthday, Jim! :flag:

It was indeed 61, I stand corrected.

My main memory of this game was the cunning, efficient Sammy Baird, who scored a penalty.

Who is your grandad by the way?

Talking of older players...your nom de plume brings back memories of a red haired squad player who managed a hat trick at Tynecastle when we were relegation threatened....although rumour at the time was that , believe it or not, that we were assisted by the home side who wanted us to stay up.

I was at the Lisbon game in '72. Hibs chartered a plane for the game and the extra seats were offered to fans, along with 3 nights hotel accomodation. It was my first ever trip abroad, and a memorable one at that. We stayed at a hotel in the beach resort of Estoril, famous for its casino, with the team in another hotel not far from ours. On the first evening, myself and a couple of other guys on the trip bumped into 3 of the team on the esplanade by the castle...Jim Herriot, John Brownlie...and I think the other was Arthur Duncan...but don't hold me to that because we got very, very drunk and the details are sketchy. Eddy Turnbull was not best pleased when they eventually rolled back to their hotel. The stadium was a revelation to us, considering the state Easter Road was in those days....a great bowl of a place which was below ground level...and you could buy drink inside :greengrin, unheard of in Scotland. It was also a very late kick off at about 10pm....Strange people those foreigners

My first Hibs game was early 1968 or 69 and I remember the name of both Scotts but don`t remember either ( Eric Stevenson , John Madson and Thomson allan in goals I remember ) . Had to laugh at mention of Ally Scott , probably the worst player I`ve ever seen wear the famous green .

I`ve been in the present Sporting stadium but don`t know if it`s on same site where we played in 1972 and went to a match in old Benfica stadium in 1984 which was a massive open bowl I suppose similar to old Hampden or Easter Road ( but much bigger than ER ) so suppose Sporting ground was similar . Wonder if there`s any footage of either game against Sporting ?

He was indeed but their time at the club did not coincide.

:agree: Jim was transferred to Newcastle early in season 67-68 IIRC. My remembrance is that Hibs used part of his transfer fee to bring Alex in as his replacement from Everton. Alex's first game for us was the Inter-Cities' Fairs Cup tie at ER against FC Porto.

Again IIRC he took the corner that led to Peter Cormack's second goal - though I may be wrong.

I DO know that he provided the corners that led to the decisive 3rd and 4th goals in the 5-0 win over FC Napoli in the following round. One of the best takers of free kicks and corners I've ever seen was Alex.

Jim's close control was phenomenal - there were games when no one could get the ball off him.
