1877 – 2nd January, Father Hannan suggested at a meeting of the CYMS, that they should bring the Hibernians Football Club under the control of the CYMS council.

27th February, the officers of the club agreed to come under the control and patronage of the council who would provide facilities and finances for the players. The football club now had a formal structure and financial security.

Season 1877-78

22nd September, Hibernians played for the first time in the Scottish Cup, drawing 0-0 with Hearts. They went on to beat Hearts 2-1 in a replay on the 6th October. They continued on a winning run, beating Hanover, Edinburgh Swifts and Thornliebank of Glasgow, (Hibernians had beat Thornliebank 2-1 but the SFA declared it a draw, they drew again 2-2 before beating them 2-1). They eventually lost 3-1 to South Western in the fifth round on 29th December.

20th April, after beating Hanover and Thistle, Hibernians lost, (after four replays), to Hearts 3-2 in the final of the Edinburgh FA Cup Shield. The Hibernians goals were scored by Michael Whelahan and Owen Quinn. It was agreed before the game to give the proceeds of the game to the Royal Infirmary but due to a small crowd of no more than 1,200 and after expenses were deducted only £13 was donated.
