You may not recognise the name but anyone who has enjoyed a flutter on a horse race, particularly the Grand National, will know the voice. Sir Peter O'Sullivan has sadly died after a battle with Alzheimer s Disease.

One of the truly iconic voices of British television and radio, the man was quite simply one of the best at what he did.

Here he is putting in an exemplary professional performance commentating on the infamous National that never was in 1993:

Aye, possibly the last of the commentating greats in my book. Dan Maskell, Bill McLaren, Richie Benaud and now Peter O'Sullevan.

I always remember him commentating on his own horse Be Friendly winning the Kings Stand at Royal Ascot, you'd never have believed it was his horse until he had to call the owner, trainer & rider as he did at the end of every race. His commentary on Red Rum beating Crisp in the National is another classic.

I was at Newbury in 1997 for The Hennessy Gold Cup on the day that he retired from race commentating. I'm sured he owned the winner of a race that day too.
